Dustin Johnson 2023 PGA Championship: Best Bets & Predictions

The PGA Championship used to bat cleanup as the fourth and final major of the season, but this will be the fifth time that the PGA has been held in May, in between the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Justin Thomas is the defending champion. He shot a final-round 67 at Southern Hills last year and beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the Wanamaker Trophy, the giant piece of hardware awarded annually to the PGA champ. Thomas and Brooks Koepka have combined to win four of the last six PGA Championships, with Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson interrupting the Thomas/Koepka reign in 2020 and 2021.

This year’s PGA Championship returns Oak Hill in Pittsford, N.Y., where Jason Dufner finished -10 to win the 2013 PGA, beating runner-up Jim Furyk by two strokes. But the East Course at Oak Hill will look much different than it did at the last PGA here 10 years ago. Course architect Andrew Green presided over a major remodeling intended to make the course more faithful to the original Donald Ross design. The course will once again play at par-70, and after playing at 7,163 yards in 2013, it has been stretched to 7,400 for this year’s event.

Will favorites Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler flex their muscles at Oak Hill? Will Thomas and Koepka extend their stretch of PGA dominance? Or will an unexpected winner emerge from the field the way Jimmy Walker did at Baltusrol in 2016? Read on for betting profiles of the top contenders for the 2023 PGA Championship.

Dustin Johnson Course History

Dustin Johnson will be making his 14th career start in the PGA Championship. It’s been a bit of a mixed bag for DJ at the PGA. The former World No. 1 has six top-10s, including a pair of runner-up finishes. The last time this tournament was played at Oak Hill, Johnson made the cut on the number (+3) before firing a 65 on Saturday to climb within shouting distance of the leaders. He would eventually finish eighth, tied with last week’s Byron Nelson champion, Jason Day. However, Johnson has missed the weekend in his last two PGAs, and his lack of competitive play (six tournaments in 2023) might make it difficult for DJ to put four solid rounds together and be in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Dustin Johnson Recent Form

The move to LIV has not been s successful one for Johnson. He has a pair of top-10 finishes in five LIV events this season but none in the top 5. His only PGA Tour start was at Augusta last month. He struggled to make the cut and never broke 70 in four rounds on his way to a T48. We have definitely seen a drop in DJ’s performance since the move to LIV, so it’s hard to expect much from him here.

Dustin Johnson Betting Outlook

Unlike Aussie Cam Smith, who has been stellar since his move to LIV, Johnson has not played like peak DJ. Had he performed better at Augusta, I’d have a lot more confidence in him here at Oak Hill. Unfortunately, there’s not much to like about the 38-year-old this week. It seems his better days are behind him. If you’re a DJ fan and have to have a piece of him, sprinkle some on a Top-20 but be willing to part with whatever you put down. Otherwise, he’s a hard fade for me.
