In the latest meeting in one of tennis’s greatest rivalries, Djokovic took down Nadal on the same clay court surface he has dominated for over a decade. After dropping the first set, Djoker won the next three, including a third set tiebreak to pull off the upset. It was his second win over a top-ten seeded player in this year’s draw. Djokovic also defeated 9-seed Matteo Berrettini in the Quarterfinal Round.
Stefanos Tsitsipas Background and Overview
In a stark contrast to Djokovic vying for his 19th Grand Slam title, this marks the first appearance in any major final for young Stefanos Tsitsipas. He advanced to the Australian Open Semifinals earlier this year and now will look to get the job done for real at Roland Garros. The 22-year-old turned pro back in 2016 and has already reached the No. 5 ranking in the world. A French Open championship would be just the ticket to truly launch his career into orbit.
Tsitsipas has certainly proven his skill throughout this year’s French Open draw. Unlike Djokovic, who has only faced two seeded players before Sunday’s Final, Tsitsipas has knocked off four. Each of his last three opponents was seeded in the top-12, including Pablo Carreno-Busta, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev. The semifinal match against Zverev saw Tsitsipas jump out to a quick two-set lead before extending all the way out to a fifth set. It was only his second match of the tournament to not end in a straight-set victory.

This year’s French Open Men’s finalists have previously faced off seven times. Novak Djokovic owns a 5-2 all-time advantage, and that gap further swings in his favor when one considers previous meetings on clay courts. Djoker has won all three prior meetings on the slow surface, including their semifinal showdown at last year’s French Open. He may have triumphed, but Djokovic needed every bit of a full five sets to put Stefanos Tsitsipas away in that one. The most recent meeting came at this year’s ATP Masters 1000 in Rome, with Djokovic taking the win in three sets. Both of Tsitsipas’ wins in this head-to-head series have come on hard outdoor courts.
French Open Men’s Final Prediction
This French Open Men’s Final should indeed be a great display of tennis. Both players had to work extremely hard for their semifinal victories. If history is any indication, Sunday’s battle figures to be tightly contested after we just saw Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas play a full five sets in the semifinals of this tournament last year.
The talented young Tsitsipas figures to capture his first Grand Slam title sooner than later. That being said, it’s hard to strongly recommend the underdog in this matchup. If Djokovic managed to knock off the King of Clay last round, this truly sets up as his championship to lose. Don’t expect Tsitsipas to go down without a fight, however, which should result in a whole lot of games played. This French Open Final could very well go the full distance.
