Georgia Fails to Legalize Sports Betting

The state of Georgia is not legalizing sports betting in 2022. The state’s 2022 legislative session ended Monday without passing any legislation, meaning legalized sports betting is tabled until at least the 2023 session.

Georgia came close to passing sports betting legislation and putting the decision to voters in 2021 but could not come to an agreement. Legal Sports Report recently published this detailed timeline of sports betting discussions in Georgia dating back to January 2021. The most recent update prior to Monday was from a week ago on March 28:

“Rep. Ron Stephens amended two gambling bills passed by the Senate in 2021, both of which were approved in a House committee. One bill proposes a voter referendum to allow all types of gambling while the other is enabling legislation for mobile and retail sports betting.”

With more states legalizing sports betting every year, it’s likely a matter of when, not if, Georgia ultimately passes legislation. However, it may take another two years for Georgia to pass a bill and get sports betting up and running in the state based on their current pace, existing laws and constitution, and legislative session schedules.

There was optimism for a bill to pass in 2022, but the session ended without any movement, just as it did in 2021.
