Gervonta Davis needs to defeat Hector Luis Garcia before facing Ryan Garcia in a bout that is already scheduled for early 2023; a rare circumstance in the fight game. This Saturday, Davis will face Garcia to defend the WBA (Regular) lightweight championship I n the Capital One Arena in Davis’ backyard in Washington, D.C.

Davis could face a legitimate test this weekend, as 10 of Garcia’s 16 victories have come by way of knockout. He defeated Miguel Moreno Gonzalez in July 2021, earning his last knockout victory before rattling off three-straight decision wins. Garcia has a reputation for being the feisty underdog, defeating Chris Colbert in February to blunt the youthful Colbert’s upward trend.
Garcia is not being ignored by Davis, however. In fact, Davis might try to take a conservative approach in order to get ready for another challenge from another (Ryan) Garcia in a few short months.
At 34.7, he holds the record for the fewest punches thrown overall on average each round, showing an accuracy unseen elsewhere in this division. When it comes to defeating his opponents recently, Davis has had to work harder than he did to start his career.
“Tank†landed 25 out of 84 punches (29.8%) against Rolando Romero in his most recent bout, in a fight that lasted six rounds in total. Against Romero, Davis threw 14 shots on average every round.
In February 2022, Garcia was a late substitution against Chris Colbert and put on quite the performance. Garcia held the upper hand in total punches (156-116) versus Roger Gutierrez one fight later as well, in August, connecting on 35% of his “power†punches.
Bottom Line
In contrast to the Colbert fight, Garcia will have a full camp for this one, which we saw what he could do with just a fight ago vs. Gutierrez. Known for his flash left-right combos, the real test will be whether he can survive the combos of Davis when they inevitably land. Davis, who punishes opponents with hooks and strong shots, has got 25 of his 27 victories before the final bell.
While I like Davis to dominate on the stats sheet, I think Garcia has enough in him to take this one into deep water in the late rounds.
