Injuries

Overview

At 12-3, the Green Bay Packers are tied for the best record in the NFC with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. Losing a tiebreaker to the Niners and winning one with the Saints, this is a must-win week for Green Bay, with a win giving them a first-round bye, and it could possibly lead to getting the top overall seed, if the 49ers lose. Say what you want about this Packers offense, but it is clearly getting the job done. Aaron Rodgers has been able to be more of a game manager, with the team averaging 152.7 rushing yards over the past three weeks (fourth-most in NFL). Defensively, this group thrives when it gets teams in passing situations, as shown last Monday night against the Vikings, as they sacked Kirk Cousins five times. They have averaged four sacks per game over the past three weeks, with the pass rush finding their rhythm at the right time.

The Lions have been a mess, due to a number of big injuries, including at the quarterback position. Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel have both gotten injured at quarterback, leading to David Blough starting the past four games. He has completed just 56.6 percent of his passes, thrown four touchdowns to five interceptions, and he has been sacked 13 times in these four games. If the Lions are unable to stop these Packers pass rushers, it could be a long day for the rookie quarterback. Defensively, they have also been terrible, allowing 28.3 points per game (ninth-worst in NFL) and 399 yards per game (ninth-worst in NFL) over the past three weeks.

First Quarter Spread: Green Bay Packers -3 (-106)
The Packers have had the third-best first quarter scoring offense in the league, averaging 7.2 first quarter points. They have come out of the gates even faster over the past three weeks, averaging 8.0 first quarter points. Meanwhile, the Lions have been able to score just three total first quarter points over the past three weeks. I expect this pattern to continue, with a lot on the line for the Pack.

Bottom Line

The Lions have been one of the league’s worst teams over the last three weeks, averaging just 13.7 points (Last in the NFL) while allowing 28.3 points per game (ninth-worst in NFL). Green Bay has played some stellar defense as of late (13.7 points per game allowed in last three). With the Lions unable to stop the pass rush and the Packers getting after the quarterback often, expect Aaron Rodgers and the offense to clinch a first-round bye with a big win in Detroit, covering the spread.

Pick: Green Bay Packers -12.5
