Indiana Hoosiers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Odds & Game Pick (2021)

#6 Penn State will look to stay unbeaten this weekend as they welcome in an Indiana Hoosiers team who sits at 2-2 on the season. In what was one of the most memorable games of 2020, the Nittany Lions will be looking to avenge an overtime loss (36-35) last year they suffered on the road in Bloomington.

Let’s take a closer look at these two BIG-10 foes and see where we can spot the edge.

Overview

Despite playing well to start the season overall, Villanova is exactly the type of team Penn State quarterback would have a career-high game against as he did last weekend throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns on the day en route to a 38-17 win. More impressively, however, Clifford has already led this team to two wins against formidable opponents in 2021, most notably a week 1 win on the road at Wisconsin.

The defense has played stellar thus far for Penn State, allowing just 4.3 yards per play and 15 points per game against one of the more impressive starting schedules amongst those in the top 10.

For the visiting Hoosiers, a strong 2021 has been followed up by a lackluster start to 2022, coming into this one with a 2-2 record and both losses being blowouts vs. the only formidable foes on their schedule. As 10-point favorites last week, they narrowly avoided a 1-3 start beating Western Kentucky on the road in a game they led by 14 after the first quarter.

Trends

  • The home team is 7-2-1 ATS in L10 Penn State vs. Indiana matchups
  • The Over is 7-3 in Indiana’s L10 away from home

Bottom Line

While I’m not huge on the revenge angle in college football, this is a spot I’ve taken a closer look at and am riding with it. Not only did Indiana beat them last year, but it was the first game that set the tone on one of the most disappointing seasons in the James Franklin era.

Not only do I think this Penn State team is much improved from the last, but Clifford appears to be improved as well. Through their first four games, Clifford has a touchdown to interception ratio of 8:2, with a completion percentage of 80% over his last two. If they can get up early, I like for Franklin to keep the pressure applied well into the 4th quarter.

Pick: Penn State -12.5
