Indianapolis 500 2022: Scott Dixon Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Scott Dixon enters the 2022 Indianapolis 500 after just having set a new pole record during qualifying. However, the 41-year-old “Flying Kiwi” hasn’t been having the best season this year. He ranks fifth in the standings after five races, and he is yet to finish better than fifth. Dixon had finished fourth or better in one of the opening five races in every NTT IndyCar Series season since 2005.

But where some bettors see negative trends, others see possible value. Dixon started on the pole and was the favorite at +350 last season, so we’re getting an extra +200 to compensate for his poor form this season.

Scott Dixon Track History

Dixon is a one-time Indy 500 winner. That lone win came back in 2008, but the New Zealander hasn’t fallen off much here. He looked great here last season before a strategy error caused him to run out of fuel while on pit road. He finished second here just a year before, too. Since 2006, Dixon owns one win, four poles, and eight top-fives in 16 Indy 500s. This year’s pole marks his fifth.

Although Dixon owns the most American open-wheel wins among active drivers, he doesn’t own the most wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway among this year’s entrants. That honor belongs to four-time winner Helio Castroneves. Two other two-time winners, Juan Pablo Montoya and Takuma Sato, will also compete with Dixon this year.

Scott Dixon Recent Form

Dixon’s 2022 season hasn’t gotten off to the best start. He owns no result better than fifth, a result he earned in Texas and again in Alabama. However, Dixon has been consistent enough to have never finished outside of the top 10. That has helped him rank a steady fifth in the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series standings.

Dixon’s fifth-place finish in Texas came after he started the race in fifth. Dixon’s team recorded the second-best lap in final practice, behind only eventual race winner Josef Newgarden, but he just couldn’t keep up with Newgarden and his Penske teammates, Scott McLaughlin and Will Power.

But Team Penske may have fallen off slightly since Texas—or Chip Ganassi Racing may have caught up. Dixon and his Chip Ganassi Racing teammates own four of the top six starting positions. Dixon ran second-fastest in the penultimate practice session, too. In contrast, no Team Penske driver will start inside the top 10. That should open the door for Dixon to secure a better result than what we’ve seen from him already this season.

Scott Dixon Indy 500 Prediction

Dixon Top 5: -140 at DraftKings Sportsbook
Although I have Alex Palou winning this race, I still expect a solid performance from his Ganassi teammate, Scott Dixon. I was conflicted between betting on him to record a top-three or a top-five result, but I decided to play it safe. Dixon is a conservative driver and won’t take the same late-race risks for a podium that part-time competitors may consider. Also, Dixon will need to run well consistently if he wants to secure his seventh American open-wheel title, which would tie him with A.J. Foyt for the most ever.
