Jets vs. 49ers: NFL Monday Night Football Preview (Week 1)
The first Monday Night Football game of the season is upon us, and it's a great matchup against two of the teams with the highest expectations in the league. The 49ers will be playing their first game since falling short in last season's Super Bowl, and they should be right in the mix again this year. The Jets came into 2023 with high hopes, but they were dashed within a few plays as QB Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles, ending his season and any hopes for the Jets to make noise. Rodgers makes his return in this game and it should be a very competitive one.
NFL Week 1 Jets vs. 49ers Preview
The names on offense are the ones lighting up the marquee: Aaron Rodgers, Christian McCaffrey, Breece Hall, Brock Purdy, etc. But it's the defenses that should dictate how this game plays out. Last season, both of these teams ranked top four in defensive DVOA with elite run defenses. However, both pass defenses ranked around league average.
Both of these teams will look to their run games in order to control games throughout the season. In this matchup, however, we might see the talented passing games take center stage.
We don't really know what the Jets' pass game will look like with Rodgers at the helm. It should be massively improved over the Zach Wilson led outfit in 2023 that ranked 31st in DVOA. With a talented stable of pass catchers, we should see the Jets have success moving the ball through the air against a 49ers defense that is susceptible. For San Francisco, after an off-season that both WR Brandon Aiyuk and OL Trent Williams missed a lot of practice time with contract disputes, the 49ers have their stars suiting up Monday night. This is great news for Purdy. He will have a full roster of strong playmakers who can help move the ball through the air.
The spread has taken a lot of steam on the Jets who have gone all the way up to +3.5 at most books. Additionally, bettors love the under which has fallen to 43.5. I'm not typically one to go against strong line movement, but I think this one has gone too far. These are two talented offenses against pass defenses that are possible to be scored on. I'll be on the over.
Pick: Total o43.5 (-105)
