With a week off in La Liga as the Spanish leagues go on holiday, now is a great time to take a step back and observe the landscape as we approach the 25% mark of the season. With 7-8 games played by every team, the writing is on the wall for how each of them fared during the offseason, as we dial in on the meaty part of this campaign.

Top 4 Finish
Currently slotted at #4 on the table, Sevilla comes into the break with the second-highest goal differential (+7) in all of La Liga. With dominant wins over powerhouse Valencia and searching Espanyol, Sevilla has played one of the toughest early schedules in the league and stood up to the challenge.
Looking back to last season, where the top of the table was arguably even more talented, Sevilla held their own finishing #4 by a margin of 15, just two behind #3. If their powerful 1-2 punch at the top in Erik Lamela and Youseff En-Nesyri can stay healthy, Sevilla should continue dominating the lower half of the table to rack up enough points to finish near the top.

To Finish Outside the Top 4
After showing some promise out of the gates, the post-Messi Barcelona has had a tough stretch over the last few weeks, losing two of their last three. Prior to that, they (suffered) draws against lowly Cadiz and Granada who come into the break with a combined -10 goal differential.
While the 17-year-old phenom Gavi who was just called up to the club may provide a spark to a team in desperate need of one, I don’t think it will be enough in a shark-infested top of the table. While striker Memphis Depay has been one of the best strikers in La Liga yet again, he has little help in the goal-scoring category compared to what he used to have and I expect Barcelona to continue to struggle to find their footing in the 2021 campaign.
