Elche vs. Real Sociedad, 10:15 AM, EST
In one of my favorite plays of the second half of the La Liga season, Real Sociedad heads to Elche for an early morning match on Sunday I’m loading up on. A solid start to the new year for the home Elche brought them out of the basement, but regression is sitting in as they now sit just 6 points ahead of the first relegation spot with 32 points.
Over their last five games, Elche has lost four with a goal differential of -5, including a 3-0 loss to the worst team in La Liga, Levante. With a goal differential of -11 on the season, Elche has seemingly been unable to overcome a weak backline that plagues them every week.
On the other side, Real Sociedad continues to storm up the table, having won four of their past six matches, accruing a goal differential of +2. Currently sitting with 51 points, they trail the #5 spot (UEFA Cup qualifier) by two points and the coveted #4 spot (Champions League qualifier) by five points.
Led by Mikel Oiarzabel, who has turned into one of the best goal scorers in Spain, currently averaging .6 goals per game (15 on the season), I like Real Sociedad to light the scoreboard up in this one. If they can sneak one in early, look for this game to get away from an Elche team who is clearly outmatched at nearly every position on the pitch in this matchup.
