La Liga Matchday 21 Odds, Picks & Predictions (2023)

We’re past the halfway point of the 2022-23 La Liga season, as teams are starting to jockey for positioning across the league. At the top, things are separating quickly, as Barcelona continues their match up the table currently sitting eight points ahead of Real Madrid with 53 points.

Let’s take a closer look at a couple of matches I like this weekend.

Villareal vs. Barcelona

Villarreal has dropped out of Champions League contention after losing their past two matches: at home to winless Rayo Vallecano (0-1) and against winless Elche (3-1). The Amarillo are in a precarious situation with 31 points. A loss this Sunday will certainly see them fall two spots.

With the way things are going, Barcelona appears to have a strong chance to win the championship once again. They routed Sevilla (3-0) last time out and now have 7 consecutive victories and 15 straight without a loss. This weekend, Xavi’s squad should build on the impressions they made in previous games, which they won but by razor-thin margins. They have the most goals scored (42), the fewest goals allowed (15) and are eight points ahead of Real Madrid with 53.

I like them to roll again here.

Pick: Barcelona (-135)

Espanyol vs. Real Sociedad

Don’t let the table’s rankings mislead you, we should be in for a great match here. At the bottom of the table, Espanyol is fighting to avoid relegation. However, they have drawn with Barcelona and most recently defeated Betis in a difficult run of matches.

The good news is that despite getting hurt at the last minute and missing the last game, Joselu might be eligible to play this time around. The forward is now second in scoring after Lewandowski with 11 goals, and his presence will be felt.

Although they have a lofty goal of making the next Champions League, Real Sociedad suffered a major setback this past weekend when they fell 1-0 at home to Real Valladolid. Before that, they played to a 0-0 draw against Real Madrid and fell 1-0 to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey, so a win would do wonders for their morale.

I like for a confident Real Sociedad to get back on track, moving their talent belongs in the top half of the league for years to come.

Pick: Real Sociedad (+130)
