La Liga Odds, Picks & Predictions for Matchday 9 (2022)
Eight games into the 2022-23 La Liga season and things are starting to take shape at the top (and bottom) of the table. For the first time this season, matchday 9 will pit Barcelona vs. Real Madrid at the top, as yet another edition of the famed El Classico is at hand.
The value, however, I believe lies elsewhere this week, as we take a look at two matchups I’m keyed in on as the week unfolds.

Saturday
Girona FC vs. Cadiz
Their first season in the top league had gotten off to a strong start for Girona FC, racking up seven points through five games. Things have gotten more difficult, however, as they come into this one having lost three straight. A closer look, however, shows that those three games have come against some of the best teams in La Liga Real Betis, Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid.
As for Cadiz, five straight losses to start the season was not the start they were looking for, but they do come into this game picking up points in each of their past three matches. Unlike Girona, however, those points have come against some of the worst teams in the league, most recently Espanyol in a 2-2 draw last week. Coming into this game, Cadiz ranks second to last in the league with a goal differential of -13 through eight games.
In this one, I like the combination of ValentÃn Castellanos and Aleix Garcia to be the difference for Girona squad still making a name for themselves.
Pick: Girona FC (-115)
Sunday
Celta Vigo vs. Real Sociedad
A decent start has been followed up by Celta Vigo losing three of their last four matches coming into this one. They haven’t just lost, either, as their goal differential over that span is -6 as they struggle to stop much of anything from getting in the net.
As for Real Sociedad, a strong 2021-22 has been followed up with a strong start to this season, as they come into this one with a record of 5-1-2. Things have been especially stellar as of late, as they have picked up three straight wins, racking up a goal differential of +4 in the process. The recent surge has put them into a three-way tie for fourth place on the table, as the push for a spot in the Champions League is very much on schedule.
In this one, expect a big game from elite striker Brais Méndez who is currently tied for #4 on the table with five goals on the season.
