Sunday’s Best NBA Summer League Picks: Lakers vs. Heat

(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)

The California Classic is a small four-team tournament featuring the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, and Golden State Warriors. All teams have already played one game: Miami defeated San Antonio 82-69, and Golden State defeated LA 89-84.

It is important to keep in mind that the teams taking the court are not going to be the same as the ones we see during the regular season. Summer League play is an opportunity for teams to showcase their young players, and teams are often coached by an assistant coach, team executive, or former player.

With that in mind, let's take a look at Sunday's game Lakers vs. Heat.

Los Angeles Lakers (+164) vs. Miami Heat (-4.5), O/U 175.5 NBA Summer League Bets

The Lakers got off to a solid start in their loss to the Warriors, outscoring Golden State 19-11 in the first quarter. However, the Warriors took over in the second quarters and narrowed the gap down going into the half, 43-39. That momentum continued in the third as the Warriors put up 30 to LA's 17. Los Angeles won the fourth (24-20), but it wasn't enough to win the game.

As for Miami, neither the Heat nor the Spurs looked good in their game on Saturday; Miami shot 36.6% from the floor, and San Antonio shot 33.3%. No one led the game by more than six points until the final period, when the Heart outscored the Spurs 26-18 en route to an 82-69 win.

Pelle Larsson and Lel'el Ware were solid for the Heat, turning in 18 and 14 points, respectively. Cole Swider led the way for the Lakers with 24 points, followed by DJ Steward with 20.

It's always a little challenging to predict Summer League games since the squads are nothing like the ones we’re familiar with. However, while the strong start the Lakers had against Golden State was promising, the way the game broke down the rest of the way was a bit more telling.

Miami has a few more players than the Lakers who are likely to see time in the regular season, and has a history of taking Summer League play seriously. They'll put a stronger effort forward in this game and cover the spread.

Pick: Heat -4.5 (-110)
