Longshot Fenwick (50-1) Added to Preakness Stakes (2022)
For those who believe the 2022 Triple Crown will be the Year of the Long Shot, Fenwick (50-1) will be in the gate when the starting bell rings Saturday night. Two weeks after Rich Strike shocked the horse racing world by winning the Kentucky Derby at 80-1 odds, all eyes are on Fenwick at the 2022 Preakness Stakes.
The 3-year-old colt is a late addition to the field, entering with a career record of 1-1-0 (6) and finishing his previous race in April, the Blue Grass Stakes, in eleventh place. At 50-1, he has the longest odds in the Preakness Stakes, but the books are prepared for a fair amount of action on him following Rich Strike’s rich strike at the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Tim Yakteen, who has Armagnac in the Preakness after running Taiba and Messier in the Derby, said, “You’re going to need that racing luck to have something like an 80-1 win again. It doesn’t happen very often.â€

Betting Preview and Prediction
Fenwick has 50-1 odds for a reason. His entry is trainer Kevin McKathan’s first Triple Crown starter. Fenwick’s running style is as a closer, which puts him in a difficult post position and is entirely dependent on getting clean air space to show what he is capable of. To his favor, he has had a six-week rest period between his first Stakes race on April 9 and today’s Preakness.
The chestnut colt has Florent Geroux as his jockey on the plus side. This will be Geroux’s sixth Preakness Stakes; he rode Mandaloun to a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby in 2021. (Later, due to Medina Spirit’s disqualification, Mandaloun was declared the winner.) Though the Frenchman’s experience doesn’t make Fenwick a different horse, it does add an element of possibility to his long odds.
If you believe in the Year of the Longshot, you know what you’re getting yourself into. Otherwise, there is no underlying information that says Fenwick will do anything of note in the field of nine tonight.
