Overview
Prior to last week’s collapse against the Dallas Cowboys, the Rams had won three of their last four games and positioned themselves in the hunt for the final Wild Card spot in the NFC. Now, they are in a must-win week, and they still need the Vikings to lose just to stay alive. Offensively, they go as far as Jared Goff can take them. He continues to really struggle when under pressure, completing just 42.4 percent of passes when rushed this season. This was evident in the first matchup between these teams, as he completed only 54 percent of his passes for 78 yards. His ability to move the chains on third downs and keep drives going will likely be one of the deciding factors in this game. Defensively, they absolutely collapsed last week, giving up 44 points and 263 yards on the ground. If they are unable to stop the San Francisco rushing attack, they will be doomed.
The 49ers are currently the fifth seed in the NFC, despite having an 11-3 record. They have been dominant nearly all season, but the defense has begun to falter at the wrong time, surrendering 25+ points in five of the past seven games, including 75 over the past two games. However, they have had injuries on that side of the ball and expect to improve once their playmakers return to the field. Offensively, the 49ers have one of the best running games in the league, averaging 147 yards on the ground. They are best when playing with a lead, but can struggle when they are forced to rely on Jimmy Garoppolo and the passing game, as shown against the Falcons last week.

First Half Total: Under 23.5 (-120)
After both defenses getting embarrassed recently, I expect both units to show up for this high stakes game. If the first matchup between these teams is any indication, it will be another low-scoring game. In the first matchup, there was a total of only 27 points, with 14 being scored in the first half. The 49ers also look to be a bit healthier this week defensively, which should lead to them feeding off their home crowd and shutting the Rams offense down early on.
Bottom Line
With a 5-1 record at home before last week’s collapse due to their injured defense, I believe the 49ers are going to win this game. They have the players to bring the heat on Jared Goff early, which will force him into incompletions and mistakes. The only true concern I have here is the Niners offense doing enough to cover the spread, but I think that by riding off the energy of the home crowd, they will be able to do just that. Look for Emmanuel Sanders and the running backs to have a big day as San Francisco covers the spread for the ninth time this season.
Pick: San Francisco 49ers -6.5
