Masters 2022: Hideki Matsuyama Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

It might not feel like spring in some parts of the country, but the azaleas are in full bloom at Augusta National, home of The Masters, the most iconic tournament in golf.

In just a few days, we’ll get to see Amen Corner, Rae’s Creek, the Sarazen Bridge, and Augusta’s other famous features while watching golf’s biggest stars navigate challenging approach shots and treacherous greens. As if the golf isn’t entertaining enough, The Masters presents us with a betting menu the size of a Cheesecake Factory menu.

Welcome to the first annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the myriad wagering opportunities this tournament presents to us. We’ll take a closer look at the golfer’s with the best chances of earning a coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Should you back a top player like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, or Collin Morikawa? Is it better to play a hot hand with someone like Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Smith, or Sam Burns? Or would it be best to ride with an Augusta specialist like Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, or Justin Rose?

We have some thoughts. Read on, friends.

Hideki Matsuyama Course History

Matsuyama enters the week as the tournament’s defending champion, becoming the first Asian player ever to win the Masters last season. But that wasn’t his first time sniffing success at Augusta. Dating back to his first lap in 2011, Matsuyama has played in the Masters 10 times, finishing top 20 six times, including six of his past seven starts.

Despite shooting a final round 73 last year, Matsuyama shot an incredible 65 on Saturday to build a big enough lead heading into Sunday. In his past 12 rounds here, six have turned in at 70 or under, and when dialed in, Matsuyama has shown a mastery of this course.

How to watch & bet the 2022 Masters >>

Hideki Matsuyama Recent Form

You have to go all the way back to the Arnold Pamer Invitational (early March) to find the last tournament Matsuyama was able to finish. First dealing with a back injury that forced him to withdraw from The Players, Matsuyama withdrew from the Valero Texas Open on Friday due to a neck injury.

When he has competed this season, however, he has been incredible. In his 10 events played in full, Matsuyama has made all 10 cuts, finishing top 20 or higher in six, including four top 10s and two outright wins (Sony Open and ZOZO Championship). Top 10 on Tour in SG: Approach (.716) and SG: Tee-to-Green (1.252), Matsuyama is as big a threat as any when healthy.

Hideki Matsuyama Masters Predictions

Unfortunately for Matsuyama, as well as fans wanting to see him defend his Green Jacket, all signs are pointing towards that being unlikely due to his health. With little in the way of competitive, high-level golf played over the past two months, I will be looking to fade Matsuyama in matchups as soon as matchup odds are released.
