Masters 2022: Justin Thomas Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

It might not feel like spring in some parts of the country, but the azaleas are in full bloom at Augusta National, home of The Masters, the most iconic tournament in golf.

In just a few days, we’ll get to see Amen Corner, Rae’s Creek, the Sarazen Bridge, and Augusta’s other famous features while watching golf’s biggest stars navigate challenging approach shots and treacherous greens. As if the golf isn’t entertaining enough, The Masters presents us with a betting menu the size of a Cheesecake Factory menu.

Welcome to the first annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We will drill down on the myriad wagering opportunities this tournament presents to us. We’ll look at the golfers with the best chances of earning a coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Should you back a top player like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, or Collin Morikawa? Is it better to play a hot hand with Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Smith, or Sam Burns? Or would it be best to ride with an Augusta specialist like Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, or Justin Rose?

We have some thoughts. Read on, friends.

Justin Thomas Course History

Justin Thomas is one of the many rising stars on the PGA Tour. The 28-year old American has competed at The Masters for six consecutive years, always with an impressive finish. Unfortunately, Thomas drew his worst finish of the past four years in 2021, winding up 21st after going over par in three of the four rounds at Augusta National. If anything betrays Thomas next weekend, it will be his wildly inaccurate driver, which has cost him several top-three finishes this year. However, he makes up for it by averaging 5.22 birdies per round, averaging over 72 percent, converting his greens in regulation, and he’s an excellent scrambler with errant shots from the bunker. Most notably, Thomas has great irons in every category except for putting, which could wind up being an issue on the bentgrass greens that tend to run fast.

Justin Thomas Recent Form

Thomas has been too good in too many events this season to be without any first-place hardware. Yes, he did win at the Ryder Cup, but that was not a solo event. He has not missed a cut, which is an admirable feat, while he’s finished inside the top ten five times. This includes two third-place finishes, most recently at Valspar in Florida, where he produced a final score of 66 in each of the first three rounds. Sunday was when Thomas fell down the leaderboard with a 70, costing himself the opportunity for his first win of the season. A shaky putter and errant driver have been the culprits for his inability to earn hardware but finishing inside the top 40 in every event shows his consistency to remain near the top of the leaderboard.

Justin Thomas Masters Predictions

The Pick: Fade Justin Thomas to Win (+1400 on FanDuel Sportsbook)
As tempting as it looks to bet on Thomas at +1400 to win The Masters for the first time in his career, don’t do it. Augusta National is not the best course for his skill set, as it rewards ball-striking. Thomas can hit clean drives and irons on par 3s and approach shots, but the longer fairways and fast greens will rear their heads early and often, which will prevent him from solidifying even a top-ten finish.

He has only produced one top-ten finish during the 2020 pandemic season, where crowds were nonexistent. It’s a factor and the number of times that Thomas has come up short this season is reminiscent of Louis Oosthuizen’s runner-up bonanza from last season. Expect a top 25 finish, as Thomas has done that in five straight appearances at Augusta.

Thomas will need to wait another week before he has an opportunity to earn his first win of the 2022 PGA Tour season.
