Masters 2022: Rory McIlroy Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

It might not feel like spring in some parts of the country, but the azaleas are in full bloom at Augusta National, home of The Masters, the most iconic tournament in golf.

In just a few days, we’ll get to see Amen Corner, Rae’s Creek, the Sarazen Bridge, and Augusta’s other famous features while watching golf’s biggest stars navigate challenging approach shots and treacherous greens. As if the golf isn’t entertaining enough, The Masters presents us with a betting menu the size of a Cheesecake Factory menu.

Welcome to the first annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We will drill down on the myriad wagering opportunities this tournament presents to us. We’ll look at the golfers with the best chances of earning a coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Should you back a top player like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, or Collin Morikawa? Is it better to play a hot hand with Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Smith, or Sam Burns? Or would it be best to ride with an Augusta specialist like Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, or Justin Rose?

We have some thoughts. Read on, friends.

Rory McIlroy Course History

The 32-year old Irishman had his worst performance at Augusta National in 2021, missing the cut for the first time in over a decade. McIlroy has a strong driver, but its accuracy is lacking, which means he’ll have to overcome errant shots and scramble his way if he wants to produce a top 25 finish on the leaderboard at The Masters this year. He’s averaging 4.25 birdies per round this season, which should help keep his score relatively low, even on a bad day. McIlroy is a seasoned veteran at Augusta, generating five consecutive top-ten finishes between 2014 and 2018 before falling to 21st on the leaderboard in 2019. The pandemic did not cancel The Masters in 2020, but it was played without fans. In this scenario, McIlroy delivered his sixth top-ten finish but fell apart upon their return in 2021, missing the cut in the process.

Rory McIlroy Recent Form

In recent PGA Tour events, things haven’t been much better for Rory McIlroy. First, he missed the cut line at the Valero Texas Open with a one-over-par score across the first two days. Yet, McIlroy has only competed in four solo events thus far while earning his first win of the season way back in October at The CJ Cup @ Summit with a ridiculous 25-under-par. He has not returned to top-tier form since then. However, he did manage a T10 finish at The Genesis Invitational before following it up with finishes of T13 and T33 at a couple of the challenging Florida courses. He has the skill set, but McIlroy has struggled to piece it all together as of late, which should be a caution flag to any bettor contemplating a wager on the 32-year old during Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy Masters Predictions

The Pick: Fade Rory McIlroy to Win (+1800 on FanDuel)
It’s not the right time to be investing in Rory McIlroy as the potential winner at Augusta National. It’s eluded him for over a decade. His recent play suggests that the Irishman is trending in the opposite direction with a missed cut at Valero and a T33 finish during The Players Championship. Yes, McIlroy has had six top-ten finishes at The Masters since 2010, but he had his worst finish there last season and missed his first cut of the Tour in San Antonio. His momentum is entirely lacking, and with the number of talented players competing at Augusta next weekend, it’s wise to fade McIlroy as a winner at +1800.
