Masters 2023: Dustin Johnson Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We’ll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Dustin Johnson Course History

Dustin Johnson has a decorated career at Augusta National. He made his debut in 2009 and immediately came onto the scene with a good feel for the course. Johnson made the cut in four out of his first five appearances at The Masters. From 2015-2020, he finished in the Top 10 each year before finally breaking through for his first Green Jacket in 2020. He missed the cut in 2021 for only the second time in his career but bounced back in 2022 with a T12 finish. With DJ’s success and experience at Augusta, he’s always a threat to make a run at another Green Jacket.

Dustin Johnson Recent Form

Johnson has been out of the public eye a bit, thanks in part to him joining the LIV Tour. He was able to register his first win at a LIV event in September at the LIV Invitational in Boston. He followed that up with a 3rd place finish in Chicago the next week, 16th in Bangkok, and 6th place in Jeddah in October. After a few months off, Johnson shook some rust off at Mayakoba in February on his way to a 37th finish. He most recently played in Tucson in March, posting a 13th-place finish and a solid -5 for the tournament. His final round of 77 was costly, and we’ll see if there is some carry-over from that round into Augusta.

Dustin Johnson Betting Outlook

Dustin Johnson’s choice to leave the PGA for the LIV Tour caused some to question his competitiveness and desire to win. However, The Masters should be one of the few events that are exempt from this notion. I expect DJ to be locked in at Augusta and compete at a high level like he’s done so many times before. I’d look for a Top 20 play on DJ or a favorable 1-on-1 matchup this week.

Best Bet: Dustin Johnson Top 20 (-105 at DraftKings)
