Masters 2023: Hideki Matsuyama Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We’ll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Hideki Matsuyama Course History

Well, I’d say that Hideki Matsuyama knows Augusta National pretty well. The Japanese-born professional won the tournament outright in 2021 (-10), edging out the young Will Zalatoris by one stroke. Along with his green jacket performance in 2021, Matsuyama has two additional top-10 outings at the Masters as well. Those were a fifth-place finish in 2015 (-11) and a T7 outing in 2016 (E). For an encore after the winning effort in 2021, the 31-year-old put together a +2 performance last year. While that may not stand out as a great accomplishment, it was good enough for T14 and his seventh total top-20 finish at the event.

Hideki Matsuyama Recent Form

Matsuyama continues to maintain relevance in the golf world where he’s currently 21st in the World Golf Rankings. He’s coming off of an impressive outing at the Valero Texas Open last weekend where a late run saw him climb up the leaderboard. In addition to last weekend’s event, the Ehime native has one top-five to his name since the new campaign started back in September 2022. That was a fifth-place finish at THE PLAYERS Championship (-9) in mid-March, netting him $1,025,000. Prior to these two March events, Matsuyama missed two cuts at the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Hideki Matsuyama Betting Outlook

If you asked me three weeks ago, I wouldn’t have been too confident to back Hideki Matsuyama in any capacity at the Masters. However, after a pair of great outings at THE PLAYERS and the Valero Texas Open, I think he’s an intriguing betting option at Augusta this weekend. I’ll go ahead and take Matsuyama to place inside the top 10 at +350 (via DraftKings Sportsbook). The 2021 champion seems like he has a handle on Augusta National at this point in his career as he’s posted a pair of top-10s in addition to the winning effort a couple of years back. After gaining some momentum at the Texas Open last weekend, look for Matsuyama to be in contention when Sunday rolls around.

Pick: Hideki Matsuyama Top-10 Finish (+350 at DraftKings)
