Masters 2023: Justin Thomas Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Justin Thomas Course History

Justin Thomas has been one of the best players in the world for a few years now but has yet to break through at Augusta with a win. He has made the cut in all seven appearances at the Masters, peaking with a fourth-place finish in 2020. His elite skills around the green and scrambling are incredibly important at Augusta National, but his shortcomings on approach and with the flat stick have ultimately crippled his chances to slip on a green jacket.

Justin Thomas Recent Form

Although there have been glimpses of a return to JT’s best form, he has largely disappointed in 2023. His iron play and putting have let him down, ranking 56th in Strokes Gained on Approach and 146th in Strokes Gained Putting this season. Even still, Thomas always has the ability to linger at the top of leaderboards with his otherworldly skills around the green.

Justin Thomas Betting Outlook

It seems like Justin Thomas’ odds are a bit short, especially considering his less-than-stellar form leading into the week. I would have hoped for a line more in the 25-1 to 30-1 range. There are better plays in the same range, but JT has enough talent to go scorched earth and pay off with his first Masters’ triumph in spite of everything working against him at the present day.
