Masters 2023: Matthew Fitzpatrick Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We’ll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

  • World ranking: 15

Matthew Fitzpatrick Course History

This will be Fitzpatrick’s ninth career start at Augusta. The reigning US Open champion has struggled to contend here. Despite making eight of nine cuts, the Englishman has only posted four rounds under 70 in his career. For a golfer who has charted every single shot he’s hit since he was a teenager, on a course that demands high quality shot making ability and ball placement, his results have been disappointing.

Matthew Fitzpatrick Recent Form

It has been an up and down year for the 28 year-old. In nine starts on the PGA Tour this season, Fitzpatrick has made just four cuts. Despite being the highest seed in his group, Fitzpatrick couldn’t advance out of his group at the WGC Dell Match Play in his last start, going 1-2-0. Prior to that, he missed the cut at both The Players and Valspar Championships.

His best finish this season was a T-7 in a small field at the Sentry TOC in January. Outside of that result, Fitzpatrick has just two Top 25 results in 2023. Fitzpatrick took last week off from competition in preparation for The Masters so hopefully his game is in better shape when he arrives at the historic Augusta National Golf Club.

Matthew Fitzpatrick Betting Outlook

I can’t in good conscience recommend backing Fitzpatrick for any type of bet to finish in the Top 20 or above. If you have to have him on your card, betting him to make the cut, or a Top 40 finish where you can find it, are the only wagers I can recommend. Otherwise, he’s a strong fade for me.

Pick: Fade Matthew Fitzpatrick
