Masters 2023: Sam Burns Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We’ll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

    • Last four Masters finishes: CUT
    • Last four tournament finishes: CUT, T35, 6, 1

Sam Burns Course History

Sam Burns made his career debut at Augusta in 2022. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to find his rhythm as he posted a 75 and 74 on his way to missing the cut at +5. Burns had some difficulty with his accuracy on approach shots and simply was unable to get into position to open up scoring opportunities on the green. He’ll look to improve on his first experience at Augusta in 2023.

Sam Burns Recent Form

It’s been a volatile 2023 for Burns so far, but there are reasons for optimism heading into Augusta this week. He had a solid start to 2023, using a strong weekend finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions to finish 32nd. Burns was able to carry that success into great finishes at The American Express (T11) and WM Phoenix Open (T6). He followed that up with erratic rounds at The Genesis and Arnold Palmer Invitationals – missing the cut in both tournaments.

Burns seems to have figured things out to finish out the month of March. He appeared recalibrated at THE PLAYERS, posting a T35 finish at -4. Burns parlayed that into even better performances at the Valspar Championship (6th) before closing out the month with an impressive run at the WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play, where he was the Champion. Burns went through a gauntlet of the game’s top players, including Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Young, and World number one Scottie Scheffler. Burns is boasting a 6th in Par 3 scoring and 10th in Strokes Gained: Putting for the 2022-23 campaign. However, his Approach troubles may be the story this week at Augusta, an area he struggled in his 2022 Masters appearance. His Strokes Gained: Approach-to-Green (174th) and Proximity to hole (200th) will need to be cleaned up in order to compete at Augusta this week.

Sam Burns Betting Outlook

Following his recent win, Burns’ Masters odds took a big jump, with his best odds coming in at +4000 on Draftkings (It was +5500 before his win). This is still a solid number for the World’s Number 10 golfer. Burns should carry over his confidence from his Match Play win and make his mark at Augusta after a disappointing finish last year. I expect more poise from Burns at The Masters this time around, especially after his recent success the past few weeks. I’ll be looking to play a Top 20 and Top 10 bet for Burns with confidence as we approach the weekend.

Best Bet: Sam Burns Top 10 Finish (+330)
