2023 Masters Picks & Predictions

It’s Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world’s greatest golfers taking on arguably the world’s greatest course wasn’t enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week’s field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we’ll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We’re going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We’ll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We’ll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Jon Rahm

One of the betting favorites at Augusta, Rahm is part of the “big three” that consists of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and himself. Despite the drop in performance over his last three events, there is no doubt in my mind that Rahm is the most talented golfer in the world. If not for his recent downswing and Scheffler’s recent upswing, Rahm would likely be the odds-on favorite to win. With Rahm hovering around the 17/2 mark, I will be betting him to win this tournament outright and finally put on the Green Jacket.

Pick: Jon Rahm Outright Winner (+850 at DraftKings)

Rory McIlroy

It’s a loaded field at The Masters but we’ve seen McIlroy consistently log T10 finishes since finally breaking through back in 2014. The odds are short on McIlroy for him never securing an outright win at Augusta National GC, but this seemingly adds fuel to his competitive fire. In 2022, McIlroy went +1 across the first three rounds before catching fire and blazing the field with an absurdly low -8-under-par final-round score. It may seem like there isn’t much value on McIlroy at the moment with 7/1 outright winner odds, but this number could dry up and quickly turn into minus odds with a strong opening round, so I’d recommend adding a unit or two onto McIlroy at +750 on BetMGM.

Pick: Rory McIlroy Outright Winner (+750 at BetMGM)

Tiger Woods

We all recall the miraculous win that Tiger Woods pulled off over Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Xander Schauffele at Augusta back in 2019. Woods went nine-under-par in the middle rounds and managed to stay two-under-par in the final round to win his fifth Green Jacket in thrilling fashion. Woods isn’t competing for clout or to have fun, he’s locked in on winning his sixth Masters to tie Nicklaus, so at 66/1 odds for his outright win, it’s worth sprinkling on one of the most consistently dominant players to ever appear at The Masters.

Pick: Tiger Woods Outright Winner (+6600 at BetMGM)

Sungjae Im

Two years ago, Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese golfer to win The Masters. Im would be the first Korean. Im, who just turned 25, is one of the best young players in the world. He has no glaring holes in his game and has contended at Augusta before. But Im hasn’t won an event since 2021, and while he offers value as an outright selection at odds in the +3500 to +4000 range, I think it makes more sense to bet Im for a top-10 finish. (He’s +320 on DraftKings for a top-10 finish.) Im already has two top-10 finishes in three Masters starts, and his current form suggests he has a good chance to be in contention well into the weekend.

Pick: Sungjae Im Top 10 Finish (+320 DraftKings)

Jordan Spieth

Spieth is going to be a popular play. At 18-1 to win, he is amongst the top five options on the board. He is definitely someone who will be on my card, and not only to win. Whether it’s to win, Top 5 or Top 20, feel free to back Spieth and be confident he is a core play. There’s lots to like about him coming into the week. Course history, recent form in stroke play, and the fact that he loves everything about this tournament makes Spieth a great option.

Pick: Jordan Spieth Outright Winner (+1600) | Top-5 Finish (+360) | Top-10 Finish (+165 at DraftKings)
