Mexico vs. Canada

On a day where teams can punch their ticket to the Quarterfinals, it almost feels like October baseball but in March.

This afternoon we have a must-win game for both parties involved. Mexico and Canada are looking to secure a spot in the Quarterfinals of this year’s World Baseball Classic.

Today Mexico calls on Jose Urquidy while the Canadian sends Rob Zastryzny to the mound. Both players are making the 2023 WBC debut.

Last season Urquidy went 13-8 with a 3.94 ERA and 134 strikeouts for the Houston Astros.

His opponent, Rob Zastryzny, has had minimal MLB experience. He has only 24 MLB appearances under his belt, posting a 1-2 record with a 4.66 ERA. Last season he went 1-5 with a 3.61 ERA for the Syracuse Mets (Mets Triple-A Affiliate.

With Mexico having the pitching edge, I like Mexico to get the win and move on to the next round. Jose Urquidy has as much experience as anyone between these two teams. He has had a tremendous amount of experience pitching in high-leverage situations with his time in the Houston organization. In his postseason career, Urquidy is 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA.

I look for Mexico to jump to an early lead against a kid with minimal experience pitching to big-league talent.

Bet: Mexico ML -260
