Miami Hurricanes at Virginia Tech Hokies Odds & Game Pick (2020)

With just three games remaining for each team after this week, the race to the top of the ACC is getting increasingly crowded. When the Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies faceoff on Saturday, things could get even murkier.

Currently sitting just one game behind the Hurricanes in the top half of the standings, the Hokies could pull even with a win here in Blacksburg where they’ve had plenty of success over the years. For the visiting Hurricanes, a win here would keep them in the hunt for the right to play in the ACC Championship game come December.

Let’s take a closer look at both team’s chances.

Overview

After a 2-0 start which included wins over NC State and Duke that saw this Hokies offense put up 45 and 38 points, they have alternated wins and losses with none more damaging than their most recent. While they certainly were on notice of an upset when the now ranked Liberty Flames came to town last week, the nightmare became reality after a back and forth high octane game turned into a 35-38 loss as time expired.

The loss to Liberty only highlighted a continual issue for this Hokies team, as they allowed 486 yards of offense and 38 points, as their defense continues to get torched, often by lesser opponents.

For the visiting Hurricanes, a sole loss to the then top-ranked Clemson Tigers is the only blemish on a resume that shows them largely taking care of business where required. As expected, the arrival of transfer quarterback D’Eriq King has provided a major boost for this Miami offense, as his combined 18 total touchdowns have them humming along at over 34 points per game.

  • The under is 11-5-1 in these two teams last 17 head-to-head games
  • The favorite is on a 5-1 ATS in this matchup
  • The Hurricanes are 7-0 to the under in their last seven games as a road dog

Bottom Line

A deeper look at the loss to Liberty reveals the Hokies were without three critical pieces, and quarterback Hendon Hooker still almost succeeding in carrying this team to victory against a strong Liberty opponent. As kickoff approaches against Miami, running back Khalil Herbert continues to deal with a hamstring injury that sidelined him last week, and unless something drastically changes, should be 75% at best in this one.

Pair the loss of Herbert with the likely absence of the team’s second-leading tackler in linebacker Rayshard Ashby, and the task will only be tougher for Hooker against a Miami defense that is improving each week.

Pick: Miami Hurricanes -2.5
