Mississippi State vs. Pittsburgh

Leg 1 – Under 132.5

Both of these teams leave a lot to be desired on the offensive side of the ball, with Mississippi State coming in as the 263rd ranked offense in terms of 2PT% and dead last in the entire county in 3PT%. Pitt’s offense is slightly more efficient, but they still rank in the bottom half of the country in both of the aforementioned categories. Both teams are pretty stout defensively, however, both ranking in the top 1/3 in college basketball in field goal percentage allowed both from inside and beyond the arc. Neither team works exceptionally fast, either, as both teams rank below 200th in terms of possessions per game. I expect this to be a very slow-paced game with points and possessions coming at a premium, keeping this game under the point total.

Leg 2 – Mississippi State ML

The point spread has moved roughly 2 points since the opener to now have Mississippi State as a 2.5 point favorite, and I think the line movement tells you all you need to know about this matchup. The Bulldogs started the season 11-0 and played in a much tougher conference than the Panthers, racking up some impressive wins both inside and outside of their conference against the likes of Marquette and TCU. Mississippi State should be able to gain extra possessions on the offensive glass in this matchup, a category where they rank in the top half of the country and Pittsburg ranks 275th in offensive rebounds allowed. I will take the more battle-tested and tougher team in Mississippi State to advance to the round of 64.

Leg 3 – Dashawn Davis 1+ Threes Made

On a team that struggles mightily to knock down shots from the perimeter, Davis is by far their most reliable option. He has shot the 3 at just below a 35% clip on the season, and puts up an average of 3-4 attempts per game. He’s averaging the 2nd most minutes played for this Bulldogs squad, so there should be plenty of opportunity for him to get his shots up. I like Davis to knock down at least one 3 pointer in this matchup, and the fact that Mississippi State has an advantage on the offensive boards will only help his chances.
