San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds
Starting pitchers: Michael Wacha vs. Brandon Williamson
There are a few pitchers in the league where it has almost become a tradition to fade blindly every time they are on the mound; Brandon Williamson may be one of them. Williamson is 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA, and that is no fluke because his xERA is even higher at 6.76. Playing at a hitter-friendly hitters park like Great American Park with weak starting pitchers is a recipe for disaster.
On the other side, Michael Wacha is pitching for the Padres. Wacha is having an incredible season, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.90 ERA. His game may not have many weaknesses right now, but his xFIP of 4.59 might indicate that negative regression may be heading his way. On top of that, he also has an xFIP of 5.11 in the first inning. While he has only allowed a run in the first inning twice this season, this also could be a sign of things to come.
Both the Padres and Reds lineups have the potential to do damage in the first inning. Both teams rank inside the top 15 in runs scored, batting average, OBP, and wRC+ in the first inning.
Bet: YRFI (-170)
Minnesota Twins vs. Baltimore Orioles
Starting pitchers: Bailey Ober vs. Kyle Bradish
Twins’ starter Bailey Ober is a perfect 4-0, not allowing a run in the first inning while on the road. Combine that with a Baltimore Orioles team batting .202 and an OBP of .282 in the first inning, and you have a good start at cashing in an NRFI.
O’s starter, Kyle Bradish, is one of the league’s best pitchers...in the first inning.
Bradish has posted a 2.60 xFIP (8th best) while only allowing six hits in the first inning, which is tied for 2nd fewest in the league. Opponents are hitting a measly .130 while having a .245 OBP.
Of his 14 starts, he has allowed a first-inning run only once and is a perfect 6-0 at home.
Bet: NRFI (-110)
