Wednesday’s Best MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Picks

(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)

New York Yankees (-104) at Cleveland Guardians (-112)

Starting Pitchers: Carlos Rodon vs. Parker Messick

The Yankees will aim to secure an impressive road sweep when they battle the Guardians on Wednesday afternoon. New York’s Carlos Rodon (1-2, 2.88 ERA) and Cleveland’s Parker Messick (6-2, 2.40 ERA) are penciled in to toe the rubber. Pitchers have been in the driver’s seat during early action in this head-to-head series. There has been a scoreless first inning in nine of the previous 14 clashes between the Yankees and Guardians.

Messick opened some eyes when he posted a 2.72 ERA in his first seven MLB starts in 2025. The 25-year-old has kept the hype train rolling by holding opponents to a .215/.276/.348 slash line across 13 starts in 2026. Each of those 13 outings was kicked off with a clean first inning. The loss of three-time MVP Aaron Judge to a rib injury makes this Yankees lineup a lot less scary. Trust Messick to maintain his streak.

Progressive Field has treated Rodon well throughout his career. The veteran southpaw has logged an impressive 2.82 ERA and racked up 89 strikeouts in 14 appearances at the Cleveland stadium. Take note that Rodon has also escaped the opening frame unscathed in eight of his last 10 starts and is facing a Guardians roster that ranks 25th in first-inning OPS (.669). There’s a blueprint for success laid out for Rodon.

Pick: NRFI (-132)

Cincinnati (+138) at San Diego Padres (-164)

Starting Pitchers: Brady Singer vs. Michael King

An intriguing rubber match is set for Wednesday after the Reds and Padres split two games to begin the week. Cincinnati will hand the ball to Brady Singer (2-6, 5.89 ERA), while San Diego counters with Michael King (4-5, 3.41 ERA). Floundering offenses are the key to this pick. Over the past 15 days, the Padres have scored 39 runs, and the Reds have scored 46 runs. Those are two of the four lowest tallies in the Majors.

King has had no trouble excelling when he first steps on the mound. The New York native has given up just one first-inning run in 13 starts, limiting opponents to a .182 on-base percentage in that stretch. The only extra-base knock came via a solo home run. The Reds enter this series finale with the highest strikeout rate versus right-handers in the National League (24.2 percent). Expect King to lean on his reliable five-pitch mix to get the job done.

There’s no denying that Singer has struggled to find his footing. However, he couldn’t have asked for a better matchup to get on track. The Padres are not only the lowest-scoring offense lately. They are the lowest-scoring offense in the sport this campaign (3.80 runs per contest), thanks to a putrid .216/.291/.357 team slash line. Failures at the plate are why San Diego has the highest NRFI cash rate in all of baseball (67 percent).
