Wednesday’s Best MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Picks
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
San Diego Padres (+176) at Philadelphia Phillies (-210)
Starting Pitchers: Walker Buehler vs. Cristopher Sanchez
The Phillies aim to earn a sixth straight win versus the Padres when the two squads battle on Wednesday evening. Philadelphia will hand the ball to Cristopher Sanchez (6-2, 1.47 ERA), while San Diego counters with Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.88 ERA).
Take note that this is the same pitching matchup as last Wednesday. Buehler sat down the Phillies in order, and Sanchez worked around a leadoff single to complete a scoreless first inning.
There’s no understating Sanchez’s recent mastery. The 29-year-old is riding an incredible 44.2 scoreless innings streak that spanned across the entire month of May. Control has been the key to his dominance, as he has tallied 45 strikeouts compared to three walks in his latest five-start stretch.
Trust Sanchez to remain locked in against a San Diego offense that gets on base at the lowest rate in the Majors during the first inning (.261).
Sanchez isn’t the only one benefiting from a favorable draw. Buehler will face a Philadelphia lineup that has produced the fewest runs (29) and recorded the lowest OPS (.572) over the past 15 days.
Struggles with runners in scoring position have killed the few rallies Philly has had. Overall, Buehler has tossed a clean opening frame in nine of his 11 starts in 2026. His success is part of why the Padres boast the league’s highest NRFI cash rate (64%).
Pick: NRFI (-128)
New York Mets (+120) at Seattle Mariners (-142)
Starting Pitchers: Freddy Peralta vs. George Kirby
A chance at a home sweep awaits the Mariners on Wednesday when they host the Mets at T-Mobile Park. Seattle’s George Kirby (5-4, 3.77 ERA) and New York’s Freddy Peralta (3-4, 3.55 ERA) are set to toe the rubber.
Early offensive woes have become the norm in this head-to-head series. There have been zeroes on the scoreboard at the end of the first inning in eight of the 11 clashes between the Mariners and Mets since 2023.
Kirby is a steady option in the NRFI department due to his ability to keep the ball out of the air. The right-hander has racked up the third-most groundball outs among MLB arms (87) and conceded just seven home runs through 12 starts.
It’s worth pointing out that the Mets have registered the second-lowest OPS (.623) and logged the fourth-most groundball outs (282) in away contests this campaign. Kirby has the advantage.
On the other side, Peralta’s experience is his advantage. The two-time all-Star has held the Seattle roster to a .149/.231/.255 slash line with three extra-base knocks in 47 at-bats.
Peralta also enters Wednesday on a streak of 11 straight starts without allowing a first-inning run. Four of those outings began with a three-up, three-down opening frame. The stadium’s pitcher-friendly dimensions should help Peralta get the job done.
Pick: NRFI (-138)
