Here are our favorite first-inning bets for Saturday’s slate.

Saturday’s Best NRFI Bets

Cleveland Guardians vs. Minnesota Twins

Starting pitchers:  Logan Allen vs. Sonny Gray

The Cleveland Guardians are throwing out rookie starter Logan Allen. The lefty has been arguably Cleveland’s best pitcher thus far. Allen is 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA with 43 strikeouts. Since being called up, Allen has never allowed more than three earned runs and only gave up two earned runs against the Twins in early May.

Opposite Logan Allen is Sonny Gray. Gray is in the early running for the A.L. Cy Young award. The Twins’ starter is 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA at 69 strikeouts. 

These two pitchers faced off against each other in early May and did not allow a run until the 4th inning; let’s see if we can get a repeat performance.

New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Starting pitchers: Gerrit Cole vs. Michael Grove

It’s not often I like betting on runs to be scored against one of the pitchers in the game, but here we are.

Gerrit Cole is still an elite pitcher and can go nine shutout innings at any time, but he has struggled over his last few outings. He has given up five or more earned runs in three of his previous five outings. 

The Dodgers have been on a heater as of late. They are averaging seven runs per game over their last five games, the best in the league. LA also ranks in the top 10 in wOBA, wRC+, and ISO against lefties this season.

Opposing Gerrit Cole is Dodgers starter Michael Grove. Grove is making his first start since coming off the IL and his first since April 20th. Before going on, the IL made four starts going 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA. I expect there to be some rust for Grove, and going up against a Yankees lineup that ranks 4th in ISO against RHP may not be the best recipe.
