Matthew Boyd Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (-160)
Consistent length from Matthew Boyd is part of why the Cubs are currently in a playoff spot. The veteran southpaw has recorded at least 18 outs in 10 of his last 12 starts. To dive deeper, Boyd has reached the 100-pitch mark just once in that span. Allowing a .212/.281/.380 slash line during the first three innings of his 19 outings has helped him conserve his energy for the second time through the batting order. Efficiency has been the key to his success.
Boyd will face the Pirates at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Pittsburgh has struggled to produce at the plate lately, posting a lackluster .661 OPS and tallying 97 runs over the past 30 days. Those are both bottom-five marks in the Majors. Keep in mind that the Pirates’ offense has also racked up the most strikeouts on the road this campaign (780). Trust Boyd to replicate his July 24th performance versus Pittsburgh, where he completed seven innings.
Jacob Lopez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-117)
The resurgence of left-hander Jacob Lopez has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing final few months for the Athletics. The 28-year-old has surrendered fewer than three earned runs in eight of his nine starts since the All-Star break. That includes seven outings with five or more strikeouts. There have been flashes of the skills Lopez displayed in 2025, when he logged an elite 28.3% strikeout rate and 28.3% whiff rate.
A matchup with the Mariners on Sunday provides Lopez with another chance to accumulate punch-outs. After all, Seattle has registered the seventh-highest chase rate (31.7%) and seventh-highest whiff rate (26.3%) in baseball. It’s worth pointing out that the Mariners have recorded the league’s lowest OPS against left-handed pitching (.637) as well. Bank on Lopez sending his foes back to the dugout with his nasty five-pitch mix.
Lawrence Butler to Hit a Home Run (+450)
Lawrence Butler is doing his best to end the season on a high note. The outfielder is slashing .269/.348/.473 with a team-high nine home runs and 32 RBI since the All-Star break. Take note that Butler remains a top-55 pro in hard-hit rate (45.6%), which makes a huge difference in a hitter-friendly stadium. Sutter Health Park ranks behind only Coors Field in Statcast’s offensive park factors across the last two years. Fly balls sail beyond the fence.
Up next for Butler is a clash with Seattle’s Bryce Miller. The right-handed hurler has conceded at least one homer in nine of his previous 10 starts. What’s more, Miller has been taken deep in each of his past three battles with the Athletics. His high fly-ball rate (33.8% vs. the 26.5% MLB average) could cause trouble on Sunday afternoon. Expect Butler, who is 3-for-7 with a blast against Miller, to capitalize on a favorable draw.
