Logan Webb 6+ Strikeouts (+136)
Though he has just 118 strikeouts in 147.2 innings, Logan Webb has been excellent of late. He's struck out at least six batters in three of his last five starts, and racked up 25 punchouts in 28.2 innings in August.
I expect Webb to throw another solid outing tonight against the league's most strikeout-prone team. The Pirates have struck out 1,317 times, and Webb has owned them in his career. In 58 at-bats, the Pirates have struck out 25 times against Webb. And while the Pirates rank in the top five in the league in scoring, I'm not concerned about them getting the best of Webb. They're hitting just .207 off of him with four RBI.
While backing Webb to go over 4.5 strikeouts is a safe play, the price is a bit expensive near -160. That's why I'm backing this alt line.
Sean Manaea Under 4.5 Strikeouts (+100)
I'm surprised Sean Manaea's over is being favored. He has struck out four or fewer batters in back-to-back starts, despite pitching at least 5.2 innings in each game. One of those starts was against the White Sox, who are one of the most strikeout-prone teams in the league.
Manaea enters this game averaging fewer than one strikeout per inning, so I'd only ever be confident taking his over in a really good matchup. The Rays aren't that.
The Rays are the least strikeout-prone team in the league. Manaea has limited action against them. Though he has struck out six batters in 27 plate appearances, I still think he's being overvalued considering how the Rays have been able to make contact this season. And while the Rays aren't the best scoring offense, they rank in the top half of the league. Therefore, they may be able to chase Manaea, who has a 4.55 ERA, early.
George Springer 2+ Hits (+290)
George Springer has hit safely in five consecutive games, recording multiple hits in three of those contests. Though his batting average is just .254 this season, he hit .321 in August, and he enters what has been a great matchup for him.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams has struck out 204 batters in 156 innings. But he also allowed five earned runs in just 1.1 innings in his last start, his second start with five earned runs in under five innings in his last three appearances.
Springer is hitting .444 off of Williams in his career. While he's struck out twice, Williams has not had his best stuff of late, so I'm giving the edge to Springer. Especially considering how well Springer has been hitting and how favorable this price is.
