MLB Power Rankings: Week 13

With just a couple of weeks to go before the All-Star break, our power rankings are heating up. We have seen some interesting movement among the wild card teams. Contenders are separating themselves from playoff pretenders, and we have welcomed a new worst team in baseball. As always, our power rankings are as much about rest-of-season outlook as they are about current records. Let’s take a look at our MLB power rankings for week 13.

Team Previous Record Last 10
 1. New York Yankees 1 51-28 8-2 Despite dealing with injuries to crucial players all year long, the New York Yankees find themselves in first place in the AL East. With their top players nearing a return this team is about to get a lot more scary. There is a reason they have stayed atop our power rankings even when they were not a top team record wise.
 2. Los Angeles Dodgers 2 54-26 8-2 The first team to 50 wins was the Los Angeles Dodgers. Utterly dominant at home, the Dodgers are the only team with single-digit losses at their home park. They lead the league in wins.
 3. Houston Astros 3 50-30 3-7 Houston has been on a major slide but their league-leading 30 wins against teams above .500 keeps them third in our rankings.
 4. Tampa Bay Rays 4 45-34 4-6 The Rays are the only team in the AL East with 20 wins against teams above .500. They have been a force this season, and are establishing themselves as legitimate World Series contenders.
 5. Minnesota Twins 6 51-27 5-5 The Twins own the second best record in baseball. However they sit at just .500 against teams with winning records. This indicates their success this season has been as much about a light schedule as it has been about their own dominance.
 6. Boston Red Sox 5 44-37 7-3 Six games above .500 on the road. A losing record at home. One has to believe that they will get things corrected at Fenway. When that happens they will be in a position to make a major surge.
 7. Chicago Cubs 7 43-36 4-6 The Cubs find themselves in elite territory as one of only eight teams giving up less than four runs per game. They are one of only 13 scoring over five per contest. However, they are a tier below the names above them in terms of the legitimacy of their title potential.
 8. Milwaukee Brewers 8 42-36 3-7 The Brewers have been powered by their hot bats. They are one of the 13 teams scoring more than five runs per game. However, they are giving up too many runs to pass the Cubs in this edition of our rankings.
 9. Atlanta Braves 10 47-33 7-3 Atlanta surprisingly has the sixth best record in baseball. They are fifth in the league in runs scored per game. They have won seven of their last 10 contests.
 10. Cleveland Indians 17 43-36 8-2 Cleveland has finally stated to heat up. They have won 13 of their last 18 contests. They are one of only eight teams allowing less than four runs per game. Cleveland has not just beat up on poor teams either. They won their recent series’ with both the Yankees and Twins, and split a four game series against the Rangers. Cleveland appears to be all the way back.
 11. Texas Rangers 15 43-36 6-4 The Rangers have really turned on the jets. They have been absolutely ligths out at Arlington where they hold a 28-15 record. Their 28 home wins in the third highest mark in baseball. They are also third in runs scored per game.
 12. Philadelphia Phillies 9 41-38 1-9 Philadelphia continues to collapse, and have lost nine of their last ten. Losers of seven straight games, the Phillies starters have given up 57 runs in their last nine contests.
 13. Washington Nationals 14 38-40 6-4 Thanks to some improved pitching, Washington has won five of their last seven contests. They still need some bullpen help, but the schedule gods have been kind. Washington will be facing three of the worst teams in baseball in each of their next 12 games.
 14. Arizona Diamondbacks 11 40-40 3-7 Arizona has lost six of their last seven contests. Interestingly, the Diamondbacks have actually been much worse at home this season. They have been great on the road but hold a 15-21 home record.
 15. San Diego Padres 12 39-40 5-5 The Padres have won four of their last seven. Unfortunately, they dropped three straight to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Consistency is the only thing in the way of a major wild card run.
 16. St. Louis Cardinals 13 40-37 6-4 The Cardinals have won nine of their last 14. They have brought their record back to respectability in the process.
 17. Cincinnati Reds 18 36-40 6-4 The Reds are one of only eight teams allowing less than four runs per game. They are one of only five teams with more than 20 wins against teams above .500.
 18. New York Mets 16 37-43 4-6 The Mets have lost seven of their last 11 contests. They have been strong at home this season. However, they have not been able to score enough runs to keep up with their runs against. Until their pitching staff steps up, the playoffs will be nothing more than a pipe dream.
 19. Colorado Rockies 21 41-37 5-5 Second in the league in runs scored, the Rockies have started to make a move. They have struggled against the better teams, but have held their own against the rest. They are currently in the wildcard mix. Colorado can stay there if they can find a way to limit the runs against when playing at Coors Field.
 20. Oakland Athletics 19 41-38 6-4 Oakland is one of only five teams with a winning record against teams above .500. The A’s have won five of their last seven.
 21. Los Angeles Angels 20 39-40 5-5 The Angels are one of only 13 teams scoring more than five runs per game. However, they continue to give up far too many runs to win on a regular basis.
 22. Pittsburgh Pirates 23 36-41 6-4 Fresh off of a sweep of the San Diego Padres, the Pirates are flying high. After losing seven straight, the Pirates successfully took advantage of an easy patch in their schedule. They have won six of their last eight games.
 23. Chicago White Sox 22 36-41 5-5 The White Sox continue to excite but are still at least a year away. How they navigate this stretch before the All-Star break may determine the fate of their season.
 24. Seattle Mariners 24 35-47 6-4 The Mariners are one of only three teams allowing more than five runs per game. They have won four of their last five, but that has more to do with their opponents.
 25. San Francisco Giants 26 33-44 5-5 The Giants are one of only three teams scoring less than four runs per game. As such they have the worst run differential in the National League.
 26. Kansas City Royals 27 28-52 5-5 Kansas City has won five of their last eight despite a tougher patch of schedule. They have scored the sixth fewest runs per game in the league.
 27. Detroit Tigers 25 26-48 2-8 Losers of four straight, the Tigers are one of only three teams in baseball scoring under four runs per game.
 28. Toronto Blue Jays 28 29-51 4-6 They may actually be the best of the teams near the bottom of our rankings. However, due to playing in the AL East, their record may never reflect that. The Jays are expected to be heavy sellers leading up to, and at the deadline.
 29. Miami Marlins 29 30-47 6-4 The Miami Marlins are no longer the basement dwellers in our rankings. Thanks to a farm system stacked with pitching talent, the Marlins have started to pick it up as of late. Jordan Yamamoto and Zach Gallen have joined Caleb Smith in what has suddenly become a formidable rotation. It is slated to get even better when they call up potential ace Sixto Sanchez later this season.
 30. Baltimore Orioles 30 22-57 1-9 Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new worst team in baseball. The Orioles have been truly pathetic this season. They show no signs of being able to turn their season around.
