MLB Power Rankings: Week 7

With the MLB season in full swing, team strengths and weaknesses are becoming more clear. Teams that rode an easy schedule to a strong record have fallen back to earth. Other teams who were struggling uncharacteristically have righted their ships. As always, power rankings are meant to not only account for current team form, but rest of season projections. Let’s see how things changed from our previous installment.

1. New York Yankees 1 24-16 7-3 It is almost alarming how good the Yankees have been despite all the injuries they are dealing with. No team in baseball has been more impressive.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers 2 27-16 7-3 The Dodgers continue to score runs, and remain the favorites to represent the National League in the World Series. When they are locked in, the Dodgers are as good as any team in baseball.
3. Houston Astros 3 26-15 8-2 The Astros remain the best American League team outside of the AL East. They are among the top ten in both runs scored and team ERA.
4. Boston Red Sox 8 22-19 8-2 Winners of five straight and 11 of their last 13, the Red Sox seem to have found a cure for their World Series hangover. They are back to playing like one of the best teams in baseball. Boston has much tougher teams scheduled over the next month.
5. Philadelphia Phillies 5 23-16 7-3 The Phillies have established themselves as the toast of the NL East.
6. Tampa Bay Rays 6 24-15 5-5 The Rays have fallen back to earth after a scorching start to the season. The road only gets tougher for them over the next month.
7. Chicago Cubs 9 24-14 8-2 Winners of 12 of their last 14, the Cubs record now reflects their talent. They are the only team in the top five in both runs scored and team ERA.
8. St. Louis Cardinals 4 22-19 2-8 The Cardinals take a major drop in our power rankings after losing 9 of their last 11 contests.
9. Minnesota Twins 10 25-14 6-4 The Twins continue their strong play, and rank inside the top ten in both team ERA and runs scored.
10. Milwaukee Brewers 11 24-18 7-3 Christian Yelich is in full MVP form, and has helped power the Brewers to 11 wins in their last 16 games.
11. Cleveland Indians 12 21-18 5-5 The Indians have too much talent to continue their scoring woes, but have actually seen their runs scored per game dip from 3.88 to 3.56 since our last power rankings.
12. Washington Nationals 7 16-25 3-7 The Nationals have been an utter disappointment this season, and have lost 18 of their last 27 games.
13. New York Mets 13 19-20 4-6 What was supposed to be the strength of the Mets team has let them down this season. They sit near the bottom in team ERA.
14. Atlanta Braves 14 21-20 6-4 The Braves find themselves in second place of what was supposed to be a powerhouse NL East. The powerhouse division discourse now seems a little premature, but the Braves should stay in the mix going forward.
15. Los Angeles Angels 24 19-21 6-4 The Los Angeles Angels have been on a roll lately. They have won 11 of their last 16 and are quickly turning their season around.
16. San Diego Padres 15 22-19 5-5 The Padres have an exciting core, but need to start scoring more runs. Their top ten pitching staff keeps them in games, but their lack of offensive firepower stops them from finding any consistency.
17. Oakland Athletics 16 19-23 5-5 The Athletics have been a playoff worthy team at home. Only four teams in baseball have lost more road games.
18. Cincinnati Reds 20 18-23 5-5 The Reds are the only team in the league with a losing record despite a positive run differential. They are second in the league in team ERA, but may not have the talent to score enough runs to win consistently.
19. Arizona Diamondbacks 18 22-19 4-6 The Diamondbacks are top ten in runs scored per game. They have failed to climb our rankings due to losing six of their last eight.
20. Seattle Mariners 17 20-23 2-8 The Mariners are crumbling after a hot start to the season. They have lost 12 of their last 14 games.
21. Colorado Rockies 19 19-24 6-4 The Rockies have no problems scoring runs, but are giving up far too many themselves. They are one of only four clubs with a team ERA over five runs.
22. Pittsburgh Pirates 21 20-17 7-3 The Pirates are the only team in their division with a negative run differential. They have won eight of their last 11 games.
23. Toronto Blue Jays 22 16-24 2-8 The Blue Jays have been an unmitigated disaster this season. Things only project to get worse for a team that is positioning themselves as sellers. Not even the arrival of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has changed things.
24. Texas Rangers 23 17-21 3-7 Only the Baltimore Orioles pitching staff has given up more runs per game. They have lost five of their last six, and figure to ride the strength of schedule wave for the rest of the season.
25. Detroit Tigers 25 18-20 5-5 The Tigers would be lower on these rankings if not for the brilliance of breakout pitcher Matt Boyd. They have won five of his eight starts, keeping them from being a true basement team.
26. San Francisco Giants 26 17-23 5-5 The Giants are one of eight teams scoring less than four runs per game. They will continue to struggle for the rest of the season.
27. Chicago White Sox 27 18-21 4-6 The White Sox continue to flash. They could be a factor as soon as 2020 due to some key young pieces.
28. Kansas City Royals 29 14-27 3-7 The Royals bottom five pitching unit keeps them in the basement. They are scoring enough runs to win games, but need help.
29. Baltimore Orioles 28 14-26 4-6 The Orioles only saving grace is that a team named the Miami Marlins exists in the MLB universe.
30. Miami Marlins 30 10-29 2-8 The worst team in baseball is facing some stiff competition this year.
