MLB Same Game Parlay Odds, Picks & Predictions: Friday (8/18)

While both teams are relatively out of it, anytime the Yankees and Red Sox meet up its a fun one for the fans. We also have a few MLB series between playoff hopefuls beginning today, including the most interesting one to me, a matchup between the Mariners and Astros.

Let’s dive into the SGP market and find our favorite bets of the day.

Thursday's MLB Best Same Game Parlay Bets

Kansas City Royals at Chicago Cubs

Since being traded to the Royals, Cole Ragans has been excellent. He has a double-digit K/9. While the walks are a bit elevated, he is making for it with a GB% around 50%. The Cubs are middle of the road offensively against lefties, and Ragans should be able to keep that streak going and post yet another solid start.

The Royals have a 122 wRC+ in the month of August, which is good for seventh-best in baseball during that span. They are making a ton of contact, which is seemingly helping them break out. Aside from his last start, Jameson Taillon has been better lately. Still, he’s having a horrendous season and has been allowing a ton of loud contact. The high-contact Royals might make for a difficult matchup for him.

This is a revenge game for Nelson Velazquez, the former Cub who made his way to the Royals this season. In a small sample this entire season for both teams, he has a combined wRC+ of around 180. He hits the ball extremely hard when he makes contact, and the tools are loud. A player with his kind of power should not be at these odds for 2+ TBs.

Parlay Odds: +500

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals

The Mets have been fairly awful since the trade deadline for a number of reasons, but their offense has not been the biggest issue. Their 97 wRC+ isn’t anything to be excited about, but it is far from the worst in the league. One thing they do still do well is hit the long ball. Zack Thompson had some control issues in the Minors as a starter this season. But he’s been good out of the bullpen with the big club, but he is certainly not a pitcher striking fear in opposing offenses. The Mets should be able to have a big day at the dish today.

Joey Lucchesi has to take down the Cardinals’ offense, which is still really strong on paper versus lefties. Lucchesi has struggled at the MLB level this season. Still, he is a veteran arm who just needs to keep the Mets’ offense in this one, and that’s a task I think he can handle.

I do not understand how or why Pete Alonso has longer odds than Brandon Nimmo and countless other Mets in this one. Alonso is probably not getting you multiple hits, but he is likely to hit one for extra bases. The Mets need him to play well for them to score, so give me Alonso as part of this SGP.

Milwaukee Brewers at Texas Rangers

This is more of a bet on the Brewers’ struggles with lefties than anything else. Milwaukee has an 89 wRC+ versus Southpaws this season, which is bottom-five in the league. For all of his struggles, Andrew Heaney excels at generating swing and misses, which goes a long way against an offense like Milwaukee.

The Rangers’ offense has to take down Brandon Woodruff, which is becoming increasingly harder to do. Still, their offense is still one of the very best in the league. Woodruff’s underlying numbers look more like a three-ERA pitcher than a two-ERA pitcher, so maybe this is the day it catches up to him.

Nathaniel Lowe’s odds always surprise me, as he’s been a player who has dominated righties all season. He has a 141 wRC+ and hits at the middle of this order, giving him a number of chances to go for extra bases. I like him more than most other hitters in this lineup today.
