Arizona Diamondbacks at Washington Nationals

It's been a brutal start to the season for Twins starter Chris Paddack. He has yet to make it past the fourth inning in either of his two starts and has a 14.73 ERA. You look deeper into the metrics, and he's near the bottom percentile in most categories, including strikeout percentage (6th), whiff rate (15th), and pitch run value (1st). He's struggling with movement and control, and we're seeing hitters make solid contact.

It will be tough against the first-place Tigers, who have a lineup that has been hitting well to start the season. They are fourth in batting average (.261) and seventh in on-base percentage (.348). This Detroit lineup doesn't have much history against Paddack; Gleyber Torres is 4-for-8, and even Javier Baez has some success at 2-for-4, but this whole lineup should have success against a struggling Paddack.

San Francisco Giants at New York Yankees

The National League West will be an exciting division to watch all season. Add the Giants to the mix with a 10-3 record. They got it started early, pounced on Marcus Stroman for five runs in the first, and never looked back.

Jordan Hicks had a forgettable 2024, but in his defense, it was his first season as a starter, and you could tell he didn't look comfortable with the rhythm of being a starter. He's been better this year, but there are still concerns, specifically the 10.0% barrel percentage, higher than last year, and the 16.7% pull air percentage, meaning hitters can square it up and get an excellent launch angle.

You can't do that against a Yankees lineup that is leading in barrel percentage (13.7%), hard-hit rate (46.6%), and second in launch angle. New York's bats were quiet on Friday, but they should rebound today.

Atlanta Braves at Tampa Bay Rays

They are 13 games into the season, and the Braves have not won back-to-back games. The offense began abysmal, but it's starting to pick up. Since April 6, they are batting .300 (2nd), carrying a .367 on-base percentage (1st), and slugging .442 (6th).

This could be a good matchup against Drew Rassumen, who has just a 20.0% whiff rate and a 21.0% chase rate. The Braves have gotten better at waiting for their pitches and should be getting the ball against them and could grab their first road win.
