New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

The Yankees looked like the best team for a long time, but now look uncharacteristically bad. They are 3-10 in their last 13. This could be their fifth consecutive series loss.

The pitching is the large culprit. They have allowed seven or more runs in nine games during this 13-game stretch and have a 7.67 ERA. If they can get back to where they were as the staff with the best ERA last week, they can start winning again because even with the lineup having some injuries they are still hitting pretty well.

Gerrit Cole has been part of that problem. After a solid 2024 debut, in which he allowed two earned runs in four innings, he was smashed for six against the Mets.

After dropping seven straight, the Blue Jays have won three out of their last four. It will take a lot more than winning this series to get back in the American League East as they are 14.5 games out of first, but they are still in the Wild Card race.

Despite the losses, the offense has been on a run, averaging 7.1 runs per game over their last six. The pitching had been their biggest problem, but they have been much better during this series.

Kevin Gausman has been a reliable starter for the Blue Jays for the first couple of seasons, but he hasn't been as good this season, with a 4.26 ERA and an even worse expected 5.26 ERA.

The over has been a solid bet, so look for this to be another high-scoring game.

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers have been sitting in first place for most of the season. While most of their rivals have struggled at one point, they've stayed consistent.

The offense continues to be their best asset, as they sit in the top 10 in runs scored, batting average and on-base percentage (OBP). However, their biggest problem continues to be that they strike out too much, but that hasn't impacted them.

Freddy Peralta already has two starts against the Cubs this year, and it has gone well for him, including the last one, going 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out 11. Unfortunately, he didn't get much run support and Milwaukee lost both games

The Cubs have crashed hard in recent weeks. They were once in second place but now find themselves last in the National League Central. Much of that has to do with the lack of offense. Since June 7, they have been 17th in batting average, 21st in strikeout percentage and 22nd in OPS. They are 7-13 in that span.

It has been a brutal season for Kyle Hendricks. In his first seven starts, he went 0-4 with a 10.57 ERA before getting moved to the bullpen, where he was better, with a 3.14 ERA in five appearances. He's moved back to the rotation and is a solid 1-1 since with a 2.13 ERA.

Hendricks made one appearance against the Brewers, pitching the final 3.2 innings and allowing three earned runs, but the Cubs had a seven-run lead when he entered that game. It seems he fixed his problems earlier in the season, but Peralta has also pitched well against this lineup.
