Friday’s Best MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 13-10
Jose Quintana Less Than 5.5 Strikeouts (1.92x)
Yes, the Cincinnati Reds have struck out a ton this season, but Jose Quintana rarely goes over this line. For his career, he owns a pedestrian 7.96 K/9. Over his past three seasons, Quintana is under this mark in 33/44 (75%) of starts, including his first outing against Milwaukee this past week. He fired just four strikeouts across 4.2 innings against the Brewers. Pitching at Great American Ball Park won’t come easy for him either, as it rates as the third most batter-friendly park over the past three seasons. Cincinnati actually faced him last season and he only struck out two batters across 6.2 innings. It’s a small sample, but the Reds roster has struck out just five times in 38 plate appearances (12.3%) against Quintana as well.
Jordan Hicks More Than 4.5 Strikeouts (2.13x)
Making the transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, Jordan Hicks looked great in his first start with the San Francisco Giants. He fired five scoreless innings where he allowed just four baserunners and struck out six Padre bats. For what it is worth, he had plenty of punchouts in spring training, too. Hicks’ final three spring starts: three innings and six strikeouts, 4 and 2/3 and six Ks, and five innings and 10 punchouts. Getting this at this 2.13x price makes him worthy of a play here against San Diego once again.
Brady Singer Less Than 5.5 Hits Allowed (1.74x)
The Royals righty looked phenomenal in his 2024 debut. He had 10 punchouts (38.8% CSW%) in seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits against the Twins a few days ago; so it’s hard to not be intrigued. Singer introduced a new four-seamer to his repertoire in his opening start, and that could be the difference in making him a legitimate starter going forward. It’s obviously too early to tell, but he’s worth taking a shot on given the matchup on hand. Four of the six starters to face Chicago have allowed four hits or less against them. They have the second-lowest batting average (.181) and fourth-worst wRC+ (65) in the early going.
