Tampa Bay Rays at Milwaukee Brewers
- Leg 1: Jacob Misiorowski Under 6.5 Strikeouts (+106)
- Leg 2: Nick Martinez Over 6.5 Hits + Walks + Earned Runs Allowed (-146)
- Leg 3: William Contreras Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI (+102)
Jacob Misiorowski starts for Milwaukee in this Game 1. While we should expect a good outing from the NL Cy Young favorite, his strikeout total is worth fading. That's how we'll start this same-game parlay, as risky as it is.
The Rays were tough against right-handed pitching this season. Their 19.1% strikeout rate vs. righties was the second-lowest in the Majors. That low-strikeout tendency has carried into the postseason. Tampa Bay has just a 20.6% strikeout rate across nine playoff games, averaging 7.3 Ks per game.
Of course, Misiorowski has elite strikeout potential. His 252 punchouts, 12.9 K/9, and 37.9% strikeout rate all led the MLB this year. However, the Miz doesn't appear to have his best swing-and-miss stuff right now. He only struck out five and six batters in his two postseason starts. He also didn't pitch past the fifth inning in either outing. Plus, Misiorowski has finished with under 6.5 strikeouts in eight of his last 10 starts, including the tail end of the regular season.
Meanwhile, Nick Martinez will start for Tampa Bay. The right-hander had a solid outing against Cleveland in the ALCS, but he was shakier against the Yankees in the prior round. He allowed two runs on five hits before being pulled in the fourth inning.
Martinez's 3.10 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in the regular season were fantastic. Even so, he didn't finish the year strong. He posted a 4.29 ERA over his final eight starts, and a 4.16 FIP over his last five outings. Now he faces a Brewers offense that boasts a .325 wOBA in the postseason.
So, let's take the over on Martinez allowing a combined 6.5 hits, walks, and earned runs. He's gone over the mark in six of his last eight starts, including that ALDS outing against New York. He's also gone over 6.5 in eight of his last 11 starts. Martinez could scatter hits and walks in this matchup, even if he limits the runs.
William Contreras is one Milwaukee hitter who can do damage against Martinez. The catcher has been anchoring the Brewers' offense this postseason, batting .367 with a 1.157 OPS in the playoffs. He has over 1.5 hits, runs, and RBI in five of eight postseason games. Contreras also has head-to-head success vs. Martinez, with a .944 OPS in 18 career at-bats.
