Monaco Grand Prix 2022: Lewis Hamilton Betting Odds, Preview & Prediction

Formula One’s winningest driver is in the midst of his worst season in over a decade. With six races complete, Lewis Hamilton is yet to win—that hasn’t happened since 2016. Coincidentally, Hamilton then proceeded to win his first Monaco Grand Prix that year. Unfortunately, a similar outcome probably isn’t in the cards this Sunday.

Hamilton has just one podium so far this year. He had four at this point last year and five the year before. Hamilton has failed to record more than one podium through six races just once in his career, and that came all the way back in 2009.

Lewis Hamilton Track History

Hamilton has won at Monaco three times in 14 starts. He took home first place in 2008, 2016, and 2019. Notably, his first win here came on a different configuration of the track; the new 3.3-kilometer layout wasn’t adopted until 2015. Of course, Hamilton still owns the fastest lap ever on the new layout, a record he set during last year’s race.

Hamilton doubtlessly has the best record at Monaco among all active drivers. Only one other entrant, 40-year-old Fernando Alonso, has multiple wins in Monte Carlo. His two poles also rank tied for first among active drivers, and his two fastest laps rank alone in first.

Lewis Hamilton Recent Form

Although Hamilton has been dominant at Monaco, he hasn’t been good this season. Mercedes no longer has the speed advantage it once did, and the team has struggled all year as a result. Their best finish is third, which Hamilton has achieved once. His teammate, George Russell, has achieved it twice. Russell has even finished ahead of Hamilton in every race since Bahrain.

Hamilton has not been great on the street circuits this season, but he has been decent. He finished 10th in Jeddah, fourth in Australia, and sixth in Miami. Most other drivers would consider those respectable numbers, but most other drivers are not Lewis Hamilton. As a result, Hamilton has been a good driver to bet against in matchup markets this season.

Also, Mercedes and Hamilton both struggled in the third sector of Barcelona. The segment’s slow-speed corners make it a favorable comparator to Monaco. But Hamilton’s 27.82-second performance through that segment in qualifying ranked ninth, placing him behind Valterri Bottas, George Russell, and both Haas drivers.

Free Practice 1: Sergio Perez (-120 via DraftKings Sportsbook) vs. Lewis Hamilton
The full-race matchups haven’t been released yet, so we’re stuck with a practice matchup. But the best way to handle Hamilton this weekend is to fade him, and this is where we’ll start. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez ranked fifth through Barcelona’s third sector in last weekend’s qualifying, and he had a 0.36-second advantage over the veteran. Perez didn’t practice in the first session in Barcelona, but he ranked fourth after the first practice session in Miami, while Hamilton ranked eighth.

I recommend that you fade Hamilton on most full-race matchup markets this weekend. I’ll revisit this article to include a bet for the full race once those lines get posted.
