Sunday's Best WNBA Picks: Mystics vs. Sun
(Odds Courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Washington Mystics Halftime/Full Game Winner (-125)
The Washington Mystics head into the 2025 campaign looking to build a future through the draft. The Mystics selected five players in this year's draft-- electing to keep four of the five on the roster for this season.
Kentucky guard, Georgia Amoore, who was drafted sixth overall, will be out for the season, after suffering an ACL injury during preseason. However, that did not damper the spirits for Washington, as they opened up the season with a victory against the Atlanta Dream.
The Mystics poured in 90 points, against an Atlanta team that made strides to fortify their defense by adding Britney Griner, and Brionna Jones. The Dream were no match for the youth movement of the Washington Mystics, who shot 50% from the field, as well as from beyond the perimeter.
After letting go of most of their talent from last season, the Connecticut Sun unfortunately do not possess the weapons to keep up with the Mystics. Washington seemed to be a cohesive unit in their first contest, even coming back from a fourth quarter deficit to secure the win. Whereas Connecticut is more of a group of players with no real chemistry at the moment.
Sonia Citron 11+ Points (-105)
Sonia Citron made an instant impact for the Mystics in the first contest of the season, scoring 19 points on six-of-seven shooting from the field, while knocking down two attempts from beyond the arc, and the free-throw line. The first pick of the 2025 draft finished the contest second in scoring for the team in only 24 minutes on the floor.
All around this was a masterful maiden performance for Citron, and today the opponent is one of the lowest-ranked defensive teams coming into the season. While a repeat of such efficiency is difficult to believe, The Washington guard needs nine fewer points on this bet.
Citron is averaging 13 points over two preseason games and one regular season contest. The rookie for the Mystics has scored no fewer than 15 points in the previous two contests. Citron connected on the last four out five three-pointers, and five consecutive free-throws over that span.
Connecticut Sun Under 19.5 First Quarter Points (-115)
Normally we would avoid such a small total, yet the Connecticut Sun are a team that has been more or less randomly thrown together out of necessity, with no real vision for the future. This will be the first contest for Sun, and things don't get any easier with the early start.
Connecticut averaged 72.5 points on 40% shooting from the field, and 33% from beyond the arc this preseason. The Sun scored a combined 18.5 points in the first quarter of those contests. Connecticut only put up 12 1Q points in their final preseason game against the Storm.
Washington is certainly in favor of a contest that features a fast tempo, however we expect the Sun to have difficulty scoring in the beginning stages of this game. The Mystics held the Dream to 40% shooting from the field, and 33% from beyond the arc. Connecticut is a far cry from Atlanta in regards to offensive weapons, so the Washington defense should prove to be difficult to score on-- at least for the first quarter.
