Navy Midshipmen at Tulane Green Wave Odds & Game Pick (2020)

Week 3 of the 2020 college football season has officially arrived, as the big boys in the BIG 12 (and AAC?) are beginning to enter the picture. While we’re still a week away from the SEC starting play, this week still offers a handful of intriguing matchups for bettors to get down on.

Let’s take a look at one such matchup tomorrow where I’ve identified an edge.

Overview

Make no mistake about, Navy got absolutely boat raced in their first game of the season two weeks ago, losing 55-3 to BYU in a game that could’ve reached the 70’s if desired. In a game you could tell was over after the first two positions, Navy was up against a team full of grown men, who have played together for years.

It also came out after kickoff, that Navy had yet to have a practice of full contact, which was evident as the struggled to tackle from the jump. Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, true to form, called the performance “your worst nightmare.”

For the Green Wave, their first game of the season was a narrowly avoided worst nightmare in its own right. After entering the fourth quarter trailing Sun Belt foe South Alabama 13-24, Tulane rattled off two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull out the 27-24 victory.

A potential hole coming into the season was certainly exposed for the Green Wave, as their secondary gave up 321 yards through the air on the way to 386 yards of total offense. A closer look shows if it were not for -50 yards from the quarterback, the total offensive output for South Alabama was well over the 400-yard mark.

  • Navy is 10-1-1 ATS in their last ten following a straight-up loss of more than 20
  • The road team (Navy) is 4-0-1 ATS in these two teams last head to head meetings

Bottom Line

Being in a standalone Monday night spot, the world was watching when Navy got ran off the field now two full weeks ago, and thus I think we see an inflated number here. With two weeks of actual contact in practice for Navy to prepare for this one, I think we see a re-focused effort from a team that is much better than they showed on September 7th.

Before last week’s fourth quarter, Tulane struggled to do much of anything against a team they had a clear talent advantage over. Not only is the talent gap closed this week, but I expect this proud Navy defense to play with an added vengeance after being humiliated in their first showing this season.

Pick: Navy +7
