Thursday’s Best NBA Summer League Picks & Bets
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
Detroit Pistons (-230) vs. Miami Heat (+5) | O/U 180.5 (-112/-108)
The Pistons were on a Summer League roll until they met the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, losing 89-73. With nothing to play for anymore, it is doubtful we will see Ronald Holland II in this game. Without him, even if Miami opts to sit Kel'el Ware, the Heat is the better team.
But since Miami has lost two and the Pistons have won two, Detroit comes into the game favored. Let's take advantage of that.
Pick: Heat +5 (-105)
Atlanta Hawks (-7) vs. Memphis Grizzlies (+245) | O/U 186.5 (-114/-110)
The Hawks are undefeated, coming off a 111-108 overtime win in their last matchup versus Houston. They don't play a ton of defense, but who does in Summer League play? However, they do have the highest scoring offense in Vegas at 104.5 points per game. Memphis is 1-2, lost their last game (96-84 to Golden State) and give up more points per game (91.3) than they score (86).
It's hard to win games like that, let alone be competitive.
Pick: Atlanta -7 (-114)
San Antonio Spurs (-106) vs. Charlotte Hornets (-1) | O/U 184 (-110/-114)
Both teams have had solid outings in Las Vegas, but with the Spurs shutting down number two overall draft pick Dylan Harper, I have a hard time picking them to win. With six players averaging in double digits for the Hornets, that tells me that they've done something hard to do in Vegas - they've figured out how to play like a team consistently.
It will be one of the better Summer League games, but without Harper in the lineup for San Antonio, the right pick is clear.
Pick: Charlotte Moneyline (-114)
Denver Nuggets (+440) vs. Los Angeles Clippers (-10) | O/U 181.5 (-110/-114)
If the thought of taking candy from a baby has ever appealed to you, then you may want to consider betting on this game. The Clippers come into it undefeated at 3-0, and while they are only averaging 89.3 points per game (21st), they have played top-notch defense (80.3 points per game allowed).
Denver, on the other hand, has not been very good in Sin City. Yes, they are scoring more points than the Clippers per game (89.7), but they can't play defense (95 points per game allowed).
Pick: Clippers -10 (-115)
