NCAA Tournament Cinderella Guide: 13-16 Seeds (2026 March Madness)

Clock Already Struck Midnight

(16 Prairie View A&M, 16 LIU, 16 Howard, 16 Lehigh, 16 Siena, 15 Furman, 15 Tennessee State, 15 Idaho)

Congratulations to these teams. Making the NCAA tournament at a small mid-major like these schools is the dream during a college career, and these kids achieved it. However, their first round opponents are too difficult for them to make any real noise. They don't have the offensive firepower or the athleticism to match up with the top teams in the country. They should be proud of what they accomplished, but Thursday and Friday (and in some cases Tuesday and Wednesday) will be the end of the line.

Pumpkin Watch

(16 UMBC, 15 Queens, 14 Kennesaw State, 14 Penn, 13 Troy, 14 Wright State)

Don't be surprised if any of these teams give their top ranked opponents a scare. All of these teams have one or two aspects of their game that make them capable of pulling off an upset or two in the right matchup.

UMBC is a top-30 ranked team at taking care of the ball and will look to pull Michigan's bigs away from the rim. Queens lacks on the defensive end, but their size and 2P% allow them to go blow-for-blow with Purdue. Kennesaw State likes to attack the rim and could get Gonzaga into foul trouble. Penn and Wright State are going to run Illinois and Virginia off the perimeter and force them to beat them inside without fouling. Troy is going to try to drag Nebraska into the mud and force them to execute on offense

When it comes down to it, these teams likely don't have the firepower to give a top ranked team 40 minutes, but they will be capable of making them uncomfortable.

The Slipper Fits

(14 North Dakota State, 13 Hawaii, 13 Cal Baptist, 13 Hofstra)

If you're looking for that team that is going to cement their name with the other Cinderellas of the past, look no further than these schools. They are ripe to pull off some stunning upsets in March.

North Dakota State is capable of banging with any team on the boards in this tournament. They'll get their toughest test out of the gate with Michigan State, who they'll bait into taking threes and avoiding the free throw line. With a win in that game, they could build on their confidence and turn into a real giant killer.

Hawaii will flex their size and defense against Arkansas. The Rainbow Warriors rank 26th in the nation in average height and are top-15 in running teams off the three-point line. Add that to the fact that they're fourth nationally in A/FGM ratio defensively, which means they force a lot of iso action, which is a good way to upset more talented teams.

Cal Baptist is making their first trip to the tournament and are looking to make the most of it. They will provide the great equalizer by making it difficult to shoot threes. Their 31.7% 3PA/FGA defensively is top-10 in the nation, and when opponents do get those shots up, they only make them at a 29.7% mark. If it's too difficult to get threes up, then good luck inside the arch, where they allow just .471 shooting.

Hofstra has some of the most minutes continuity from last year in the nation. These guys know each other, and that allows them to grind the game down to a crawl. Execution is key for their opponents when the possessions are reduced. Good luck against a defense with the 10th ranked eFG% against in the country.
