New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Odds and Game Pick (2020)

The New York Jets are searching for their first win of the season. It is Week 9, and Gang Green has failed to remove the bagel from its win total. It’s a little too early to talk about an 0-16 season, but if the Jets lose a few more games, that will indeed become a point of interest around the NFL. Their next opponent has been profoundly struggling. The New England Patriots really do miss Tom Brady. They have won only two games to this point in the season. Having lost to the Buffalo Bills, they are three and a half games out of first place in the AFC East, and they are now two games out of second place behind the Miami Dolphins. Both teams are aching for a win. If they don’t play to an overtime tie, one will finally improve in the standings on Monday Night Football.

Overview

The New York Jets are a team with a toothless offense, largely because of a lack of significant talent at the skill positions, but also because they don’t have an offensive line which can make a big difference. Quarterback Sam Darnold has been banged up this season and has missed games due to injury. Backup quarterback Joe Flacco wasn’t able to provide a spark. Darnold is back in the lineup, but the Jets haven’t scored more than 10 points in any of their last four games. Their last game with more than 10 points scored came on October 1 against the Denver Broncos. Head coach Adam Gase had been calling plays earlier in October, but as the month moved along, he delegated the play calling to coordinator Dowell Loggains. It hasn’t transformed a Jets offense which has not been able to maximize the talents of its personnel. The sputtering nature of the offense is part of why the Jets released running back Le’Veon Bell earlier this season.

Facing the Jets are the New England Patriots, who have to get on a roll – right now – to have any realistic chance of a playoff berth. The Patriots trail nine different AFC teams in the pursuit of a playoff spot. Getting into the top seven is going to be a big challenge. There have been many tough losses suffered by the Patriots this season, but the toughest one came this past Sunday, when Cam Newton fumbled inside the Buffalo Bills’ 20-yard line with New England trailing by only three points. The Patriots were likely to go to overtime and had a real chance to win, but Newton squandered it. New England is almost certain to lose the AFC East for the first time in a very long time, but the Pats still have an outside shot at a wild card berth if they can get hot and stay hot.

Trends

  • New England is 5-0 ATS in its last five games against opponents with a losing home record.
  • The Jets are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 home games.
  • The Jets are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games versus AFC East opponents.

Bottom Line

The Jets are easily the worst team in the NFL, and while the Patriots aren’t a good team, they have a solid defense which should keep the Jets under wraps for four quarters.

Prediction: Patriots -8.5, UNDER 41.5
