New Orleans Saints at Denver Broncos Odds and Game Pick (2020)

As the final weeks of the 2020 NFL season turn into view, teams are jockeying for position in the playoffs, and in some cases, the 2021 NFL Draft.

For the visiting Saints, a banged-up offense starting with their All-Pro leader Drew Brees has done little to deter a Saints team that has now won seven straight.

For the home Broncos, at 4-6, another loss doesn’t mathematically eliminate them from the playoffs but it certainly would severely limit any remaining hope.

Let’s take a closer look.

Overview

When third-string quarterback Taysom Hill took the reigns from Drew Brees last week in Atlanta, to many, he looked better than expected. Throwing for 233 yards, running for another 51, and scoring two touchdowns, Hill looked more than ready to fill in while Brees receivers from a brutal rib injury that could see him sidelined for a few more weeks.

While the offense got an additional boost from running back Alvin Kamara last week, the real dominance has come from their defense. Last week against Matt Ryan alone, the Saint’s defense had eight sacks and now has seven interceptions over their last three games.

For the home Broncos, an emphasis on the run game, including last week’s 189 yards on 33 carries, has worked well for a team still unsure of its future at quarterback. Second-year player Drew Lock has battled injuries this season while be largely mediocre, throwing for 1,767 yards, seven touchdowns, and 11 interceptions through eight games as a starter.

Like the visiting Saints, the Broncos have largely got a boost from their defense who last week had six sacks as they forced the Dolphins into tough third-down conversions all afternoon.

Trends

  • The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five Saints-Broncos meetings
  • The Saints are 7-1 ATS in last eight vs. team with a losing record
  • The Broncos are 5-2 ATS in their last seven as a home underdog
  • The Over is 5-0 in the saints last five as a road favorite

Prop Bet

Race to 10 – Denver Broncos +144
While Hill was solid last week, he still struggled with downfield passes and benefit from the controlled environment of a familiar dome to operate. In this one, his first trip to Mile High as a starter, I like for him to struggle early as the Broncos comfort at home starts them out hot.

Bottom Line

When this total opened up at 43.5, I expected it to dip closer to 40 before it was all said and done. With two quarterbacks that are shaky at best and defenses that are getting healthy at the right time, I like for both teams to remain in the teens as the afternoon unfolds.

Pick: Under 42.5
