Overview

The Jets are fresh off their bye week and looking for their first win. Prior to the bye, they looked surprisingly capable against the Patriots, until they seemingly got the call from up top to lose the game. With the receiving corps fully healthy, Joe Flacco passes for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. With Sam Darnold still out, Flacco will look to build upon a solid performance.

The Chargers continue to find creative ways to lose, having all seven losses being within one score this season. While Justin Herbert has impressed, in-game adjustments from the coaching staff have not been good. If you need any evidence of this, look at their first and second half splits. The Chargers average 13.9 points scored (14th) and 11.4 points allowed (T-10th) in the first half, compared to 11.2 points scored (T-21st) and 15.1 points allowed (28th) in second halves.

Defensively, the Chargers rank in the 10th in both passing yards per attempt and completion percentage allowed. The Jets, on the other hand, are dead last in completion percentage (72.5%) and fourth-worst in passing yards per attempt (7.9).

Trends

  • The Jets are 2-7 against the spread (ATS) in their last nine games.
  • The Jets are 2-4 ATS in their last six games against the Chargers.
  • The total has hit the over in each of the last six games for the Chargers.

2nd Quarter Spread: Chargers -3.5 (-106)
The Chargers will find a way to keep this game close, though they should get up in the first half. The second quarter, in particular, is a good quarter for the Chargers. They average 9.9 second-quarter points this season, which is tied for the sixth-most. The Jets, however, average just 4.7, which is tied for the fewest. The defense of the Jets also allows 9.4 second-quarter points, which is seventh-worst. The Chargers are top-five in the category.

Bottom Line

The Chargers really impress me with their ability to lose games. However, I think this is a week where they win. Still, I do not trust them enough to make enough plays to make it a two-score game. Also, the Jets’ receiving corps is sneaky good, when healthy.

Pick: Jets +9.5
