Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears Betting Preview
The Vikings travel to Soldier Field looking to retain their defensive prowess from 2024. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores returns to lead a unit that limited opponents to the fourth-fewest points (19.9) and the second-fewest rushing yards (93.2) per contest. Minnesota even added a pair of veteran defensive tackles in Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave through free agency. There is a clear intent to remain stout against the run. There’s uncertainty surrounding the Vikings on the offensive side of the ball, though.
Quarterback Sam Darnold departed the Vikings for the Seahawks in March, which leaves the team with J.J. McCarthy as its starter moving forward. The 22-year-old missed his entire rookie campaign with a torn meniscus after being selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. While McCarthy has some elite weapons at his disposal, his potential is unknown ahead of his first battle in a rowdy road environment. He completed four of his seven passes for 30 yards during his lone preseason performance.
On the other side, Chicago has its own offensive riddle to figure out. Head coach Ben Johnson will call the plays after guiding the Lions to a top-two finish in points (33.1) and yards (415.7) per game last season as their offensive coordinator. The success he brings to the table, combined with the Bears’ offensive line improvements, will go a long way in the evolution of quarterback Caleb Williams. The former USC star set franchise records as a rookie when he logged 3,541 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.
Chicago’s defense should be licking its lips with an unproven signal-caller coming to town. After all, the Bears surrendered the fewest passing touchdowns (17) and the third-fewest rushing yards (218) to opposing quarterbacks in 2024. Consistently impressive efforts from linebacker T.J. Edwards and cornerback Jaylon Johnson serve as the anchor that keeps everything afloat. Forcing McCarthy to stay in the pocket and playing sound coverage on the back end would give the home squad a huge leg up.

Ultimately, I side with the Bears on Monday. Backing the offense with fewer question marks is the way to go. Wide receiver DJ Moore is a great option as an anytime touchdown scorer. The seven-year pro led Chicago pass-catchers with 21 red-zone targets and also tallied four touchdowns of 30+ yards in 2024. He is a threat to score anytime Caleb Williams has a clean pocket. Meanwhile, the Vikings’ strong run defense is offset by a shaky secondary. They are coming off a campaign where they conceded the second-most yards (3,115) and 10th-most touchdowns (18) to wide receivers. It’s going to take a few weeks to determine whether or not adjustments were made.
