Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs

      It's an AFC West showdown for the first Monday Night Football matchup of the season. The Chiefs are slight home favorites, but the Broncos are very live to win outright. Instead of worrying about the spread, let's grab an alt under on the total to begin our same-game parlay. 

      This projects to be a defensive-minded, lower-scoring contest. Denver brings in an elite defense that ranked second in total yards allowed and third in points allowed per game last year. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph should have a game plan to hold the Kansas City offense in check. 

      On that note, the Chiefs have key question marks offensively. Patrick Mahomes will likely need a game or two to shake off the rust as he returns from last season’s ACL injury. Kansas City will also start an undrafted rookie at left tackle with Josh Simmons out. That's not ideal against Denver's ferocious pass rush. 

      Meanwhile, the Broncos could be slow to get going with Davis Webb as the new offensive coordinator. A first-time play-caller facing a veteran defensive mind like Steve Spagnuolo gives the Kansas City defense a clear edge as well. Despite the Chiefs' issues last season, the defense still held Denver to 22 and 20 points in their two meetings. 

      As Mahomes may need time to get back into a rhythm with his receivers, the Chiefs quarterback will likely need to use his legs this week. Denver's top-tier pass rush should force scrambles out of the pocket, which is something Mahomes has proven he's willing to do. He averaged 30.1 rushing yards per game last season, 19.1 in 2024 and 24.3 in 2023. Mahomes can get to 15 yards on two scrambles. 

      On the Broncos' offense, let's target a pair of pass-catchers. RJ Harvey was a receiving weapon out of the backfield last season with 353 receiving yards as a rookie. He averaged 20.8 receiving yards per game and had 15+ yards in 10 out of 17 games, as well as both playoff games. Harvey is a difference-maker in the Denver passing attack and can be a mismatch against Kansas City. He had 33 and 20 receiving yards in two games versus the Chiefs a season ago. 

      Then we have Jaylen Waddle, the big offseason addition for Denver's offense. The wide receiver should step into the No. 1 WR role as a top target for Bo Nix. This week, he'll face a Chiefs secondary that's replacing their top three corners from last year, including Trent McDuffie. As for Waddle, he averaged 56.8 receiving yards per game in 2025 with Miami, including 40+ yards in 11 out of 16 games.
